I have a friend who is tired of the stiff, unforgiving ride of his Nytro RTX. He wants to trade it for a leftover Phazer GT (2012). He doesn't care about the power/speed difference. Just wants a light four stroke that rides and handles reasonably well. What do you think?

Has he tried working on the suspension of his Nytro? If he has tried different adjustments and is still not happy I would think that he could send the shocks to Pioneer or someone else that would re-valve them to his liking.
I have rode a Phazer and it was fun for about a minute. He may say that he does not care about power & speed but he should make sure that he test rides a Phazer before he makes a decision.

That dealer is going to get a good deal... I'd say work on the Nytro put some money into it and set it up for you. But I will tell you my experience on a Phazer since I don't have any on the Nytro. I loved it, dirt bike feeling, thin seat was very easy to maneuver on. It handles like it's on rails and revs 12 grand! Sounds really cool Vtwin 4 stroke. Lots of low end torque but done at 80mph anything more forget it. So moral of the story fun in the forest on groomed trail bad once out in the open straights. The machine also offers very little wind protection but I really enjoyed it.

Oops I should've mentioned he had Pioneer revalve the shocks two years ago, which helped, but it still is harsh. He has been messing with the many adjustments without much luck. Others have said you can only get the ride so good on an 08 Nytro RTX.

He doesn't want a Vector?

Really interested in seeing what people have to say cuz I've never driven either of these sleds but want one real bad and the phazer always seemed like it was the ride style perfect for me but th power is the only thing that's concerning
Got no interest going 90+mph just want enough power for powder/jumping banks/lifting skis
More powerful phazer type in 2014 would really help the decision!

have both Phazer mnt lite (07) and Nytro FX stretched to 144 ... for most of my riding off trail and fooling around, the phazer is more fun but for longer rides or when snow is really deep the nytro is slightly more fun .... I would love to have a sled somewhere in the middle - a phazer with 120 hp and a decent suspension + 144 x 1 3/4 track would be near perfect ... phazer got a timbersled suspension this season + floats up front ... all I need now is snow!

Is It just the extra power that makes The nytro a little better sometimes? Does the nytro seem much heavier to maneuver around?
The only riding I do is offtrail I want to b breaking trail 100% of the time if I could and the more snow the better
I guess the power is better fo nailing drifts and what not

The guy I bought my Vector from (Ragdoll) owned a Phazer before getting it and hated the Phazer.
He was much happier with the Vector and said they felt like 2 different machines.
If I was your friend, I would try both first before making his final decision.

The Phazer is a riot! You need to be in great shape and manhandled the little beast. It is underpowered which is unfortunate because it really limits what the mahine can do. If there we're some way to jam a Nytro motor in there you'd have one hell of a sled. I had an RTX stretched to a 136 and it was nearly perfect. Another 20 or 30 hp would go a long way. If you're used to the Nytro power wize the the Phazer will disappoint. With that said, it handles so much better and doesn't have that sketchy feel that a Nytro does.
Bought my wife a phazer thinking she needed something with less power. She rode it once and said what's up with this sled? Sold it after one ride and 80 miles. What a junk. I'm convinced it's the sled yamaha designed to get people turned off to sledding. Got her an apex and 5,400 miles later, she loves it. Tell your friend to consider another sled.

A phazer is not what I consider a good handling sled unless you are in nasty whooped out trail, like to stand up and like to ride it like a dirtbike.Or ride it nice and slow.If so it is FUN as it gets when setup right. The lack of big power does keep you out of trouble also but there is no in between for the Phazer.A Nytro can be made into almost as flat handling on corners as a Apex or Vector and plush suspension is just a suspension rebuild or buy away.I would really miss my Phazer in the rough versus a nytro but when trails are smooth I would rather be on my SRX and that has no suspension to speak of!A nytro with suspension mods or even more so a Apex or Vector are more in between.Save your $ and do the suspension on your Nytro.

the nytro's extra power is addicting ... but ...
I think that the big factors are where you ride, riding style, need for speed, etc.
Honestly, most times I prefer the Phazer but then again I generally do not ride trails and like to be active when riding ... most of the riding in our area is twisty narrow woods trails , short quick steep ditches / hills, mix of marginal snow to occasional powder with lots of drifts - not 30' wide groomed highways. I'm not interested in having the fastest sled and rarely need to push 100 km/h (not my style) I'ld rather spend a 50 km afternoon exploring / breaking trail than a 300 km trail ride ... sorry but to me that is incredibly boring and that's what I have a car for!
For my style the phazer is better suited .... yes, it could use a bit more umph but I'm hoping that the better suspension this season will help offset the lack of grunt. When we ride on the west side of the island - longer days / bigger hills and deeper snow conditions then the nytros with the 144 backcountry tracks come out.
Considered a Skinz +4" front end for the nytro this season to see if it would make it respond a bit more like the Phazer but decided to wait to see what if anything else pops up (anyone say Exciter). The consensus seems to be that the aftermarket front end resolves some or most of the handling issues but I'll hold off for another year before pulling the trigger.
If you ride on trails and go for long runs, think that 300 km a day is what its all about and have to have the fastest sled then skip the phazer and go for the bigger machine or you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you ride like me, then the phazer works!
Seems that a lot of folks on all the sled sites think that the key to having fun is owning the newest and fastest / baddest sled ... but really, how often do you really pin it and say that I wish it was faster .... or that they never had any fun on 250cc / 340 cc sleds of the past.
FYI we picked up three more for this winter - an 08 RTX, and 07 FX and an 08 mnt lite ..... now if we could only get some snow instead of the #@*& rain!

guys that buy there wives or kids a phazer because its smaller cc wise & feels good when they sit on it at the dealer is kinda why it gets a bad wrap when it's not what they expect. too tippy, ski lift, no top end.
some like some don't.
phazers need rider imput & be set up to ones riding style.
i'd say have your buddy test ride a vector, apex, phazer, or whatever he is looking at getting to make the best choice.
