I stopped in at my dealer yesterday to see if they had my sled put together. It is in the process so I took the Owners Manual to brush up on the machine. In 2 places it points out the issue of trailering & vapour lock - whats up with that? Anyone out there have issues with this? A simple fix is a fuel shut off but why hasn't Yamaha done this already?

Next question is do you really have to let the sled warm up for 15 minutes before using it like the Owners Manual states? Seems like a long time to me.

BTW - I just switched from yellow to blue so I may have a bunch of questions that may seem a little dumb but be gentle on me...

Safety Sean,

I also read the recommendation of towing with 1/2 full tank or less. I like to arrive with a full tank of fuel from a trusted fuel station. And I don't like to loose any riding time.

I mounted two small mounting plates (JB Weld) on the clutch side of the sled near the fuel pumps and installed a pair of Yamaha shutoff valves. Two fuel line intake lines run parallel to this area. I can send you a picture if you like.

I let my sled idle until the cold idle light goes off and then ride slow for the first few minutes to let everything warm up and expand to a normal operating state. I rode my 2-strokes the same way to prevent cold seizures.

Sean,

The 15 minute warm-up is just for the very first time that the engine is ever run. It is a one-time step for engine break-in.

Here is just one way of doing a Fuel Shut Off System.
Click on the Pic and you should see it a little better, notice the RED Fuel Shut Off's ;)!

Safety Sean,

What BOUNTYHUNTER is showing is a near twin of what I did. Make sure you don't create an opportunity for the fuel lines to rub anything.

I used the setup all season last year. No problems.

Best of luck,

Bgs

FWIW - on my '05 my dealer just mounted 2 shutoff's inline w/o any kind of plate. No problems so far and the lines look like new. No robbing or anything.

Here's a picture of my solution. I used JB-Weld (clamped while drying) to attach the plates to the frame.

i've trailered yamahas for over 20 years and never had any problems with full tanks of gas in the machine on some of the worst roads ever driven in winter

There was a big discussion on this back in 2003 and 2004. Having been a site member from the beginning, I am aware of only one person that ever appeared to have a problem trailering their sled with more fuel than stated in the manual. They blew their motor and it was suggested that it was because he trailered with too much fuel, but the cause was never confirmed. It was on a Mountain RX-1. I doubt you will have any issues given the thousands of other trips made by RX/RS owners on this site without any problems.

I did mine for more of a Anti Theft Device while it's being parked at a rest stop. You wouldn't get far and it would die, more than likely they would abandon it after that.

I never worried about hauling it

Okay guys - thanks, the pics were a great illustration of a simple solution . I will probably put the fuel shut-offs on anyway because I am a bit anal over stuff like that. My work as a safety manager makes me look at potential risks and possible outcomes so I am always thinking 'what if' and then trying to put measures in place to ensure that the 'what ifs' don't happen.
