Thats not what I said.
What Ive said is by filing or shortening the stop on one side the clamp will pull out of round as its clamping tighter on that side predominately. The the other side has the pin that the two halves pivot on and you cant do anything to even out the clamping on that side.

After thinking about this I might lean towards replaceing the OEM Graphites every season or 2k miles and the clamps while I'm at it. I bought a 07 with 821 miles and it sounds so nice and quiet. I'd like to keep it that way. Copper may last longer but if it's not going to seal well then that's another story.
The poster above mentioned he just slide the exhust back and slipped in new donuts..when I did it I took out the whole thing. I'll have to search for the process of just slideing it back. It might be easier to do that every year. No? What do you think?

Well dont the larger size of the copper make the clamp out of round too? what my argument is is that if you file them just a smidg so they stay tight they last longer and dont spin and destroy the y pipes this worked for two diffrent sled for me and both lasted 4500 miles and then replaced just the donuts again no y pipes still have oem ti pipes. the small amount you remove is not enough to make it out of round to cause what you are saying.yamaha convert said:thor452 said:so your saying if the clamp is closed more it is a bad thing and wont work but if the clamp is now opend more it is ok?

If they stay tight by filing them just a smidge, then why dont they stay tight without doing it? Dont you think eventually it too will come loose? The thicker donuts are still round so they dont have the same effect as clamping one side more than the other. They will maintain even pressure all the way around the clamp as they are machined round. Being thicker - wider all the copper donuts do is spread the V on the clamp a little. They dont pull down one side more than the other. The way I see it is if you need to get the clamp to pull down tighter, then the V of the clamp has either spread open or the donut is worn.

Gotcha i was seeing what you said the wrong way but as far as personal experiance no they stay tight the stops are just a little to big like most yamaha clamps once you open them they dont seem to go tight again.

I personally would use the copper. The leaks are more a visual thing you see on the donut when you inspect them, rather than something I have noticed or heard when its assembled.
From memory I slid the exhaust back but did so by tapping them with a piece of wood and a hammer. Then you just need to be careful that they come forward again when they are assembled and that your not extending the flexible joint on the cylinder head back to the exhaust. I loosened the flexible joints on the cyliner head, clamped the donuts and then pried the exhaust forward by levering of the clamps.

If this is happening then I dont see it as the fault of the stop. Its the V that is spreading or the donut has collapsed. If this is the case then it either time for new or different clamps and or donuts. I put the spring and flat washers on the clamps in order to spread the head load of the bolt on the clamp and to take the bolt out of the equation by making sure the bolt had every chance of staying tight. Now in time if my clamps come loose and the bolt has stayed tight then Ill at least know for certain that its just the clamp thats spreading. Its just my process of elimination I guess

expansion and contraction problem
when I replaced my donuts I think it was two years ago now, I left the bolt that holds the y pipe to the tunnel loose one turn, used locktite to hold it in place. I also took a dremmel grinder and expanded the holes at the back near the mufflers. this allows the exhaust to move slightly when the engine is running. did the rag test this year, sled died in seconds. I get a little rattle noise when I first fire up the sled, but within a minute or two after the exhaust expands, it goes away. I personally think, it is an expansion and contraction problem with the exhaust and you have to have some play in the exhaust to compensate, otherwise you will have to change the donuts every two years or sooner. anyway seems to be working fine so far. almost through the second season with the repairs I made and no problems so far, not even going to check the donuts out until the thing starts to backfire again.

DEALER CALLED
Well I spoke with my dealer on Friday. He stated that his best mechanic owrked on it and the pipes were flawless when they replaced the gaskets. So how then after 58 miles did I end up with 2 broken pipes? No one can tell me. My dealer has not told me how much my bill is only that the pipes were like 700.00 but he would give me a break on them. WTF! 58 miles and I damaged 2 pipes? Something is wrong. I contacted Yamaha last week but they have not returned my calls....
The insult is that last year on our last day in Quebec my friend Tommy's ATTACK blew out 2 pipes at 3000 miles and I did the replacement for him. Took me a long time since I had the suspension and entire exhaust out, but all this season, no problem. I only sent mine to the dealer because I was too busy at my regular job to do my own work and look what happened.

As posted above there are lot's of speculations on Y pipes and their breaking.. Hard to call.
It could be any number of things. The new donuts and clamps tightened could of caused it to break with a good bump on the trail..who knows..
The mistake was not putting in SS while they had it down. I would of told you if I was the dealer that they may break tomorrow or in a year but they will break so go ss while we have it down.

PIPES
Funny how the previous donut gasket was at 3500 miles and I now have 9500. So I went 6000 miles on a set of gaskets, changed them and 58 miles later the pipes break? Remember at the time the replaced the gaskets ( a week before I left) the pipes were perfect.....

On a side note. I sled in rangley every weekend. I love rev-it-up yamaha in rangley. Mike and Julie are the nicest people ever. Mike is such an awesome mechanic. He has been servicing my 03 rx1 since new. Always done right at a fair price. I just snow checked a apex xtx ( heat red ) from them. If your ever in the area always go them for service. You won't be disappointed.

MSRP on the Y pipes is $217.49 each (can get em through Port Yamaha for $183 plus ship). Unless they are charging you the old price for the titanium pipes, which have since been updated to stainless steel and are cheaper. $631 seems high for just the pipes...maybe donuts and new clamps are in that price too?
