How necessary are they. Do most people do them just to add color to the side of the tunnel? Waiting to have a crack in your tunnel is kinda to late to say you need them, but I've always wondered. I probably stand up 20% of the time and am more in a crouch/sitting on the sled the rest of the time. I rarely jump on one side of the sled to try to carve.

I think with the quality of todays tunnels most guys are just adding for looks.

If your tunnel breaks from too aggressive riding, it will start to show cracks in a more forward position than the tunnel reinforcements (assuming that you are adding no more stiffeners / strengtheners inside the tunnel). However, the tunnel reinforcements do add a noticeable amount of stiffness to your floorboards.

i think they help a lot as well. I've put them on my last two sleds. You also get added traction with them. They look kinda cool too.

The tunnels are strong enough. Ill agree what was said in a earlier post they seem more for looks than anything. Thinking of buying blue ones for my sled just for the "looks"

The ones I have are from yamaha. They are actually the ones for the xtx and shortie. I modified them to fit on my mtx. I'm not sure if they are powder coated or not. I'm put a 1000 miles on my last set and never saw any wear.

These are not just for looks. THey add support to the lower running boards and a huge amount of traction for your boots. The looks are just a nice bonus...
