Friend of mine is having trouble with his Nitro Mountain with underhood ice and snow when playing in the powder. So much so it filled his air box with water and ice and finally would not start. He has covered his hood vents with fine screen, not sure if that helped. Has anyone got any tips that may help?

A few of weeks ago I opened my cowl after returning home from a weekend of riding and found my right side compartment totally encrusted in an ice cube that formed around the oil tank and brake disc. I'd never seen anything like it. I've since added SLP pre filter over the screen vents and oil tank vent. The past two weekends we had plenty of new snow and both times I inspected after the weekend my cowls are dry. No sign of moisture or ice. And coincidentally, no steam bothered my goggles during the rides, either.

the biggest culprits are the huge screens on the side panels, the holes next to the headlamp, the vent on the right side panel, and the vent under the headlamp. all these need screen.
then you need to silicone the ENTIRE FRONT NOSE CONE AND BUMPER AREAS. then add a foam weatherstrip around the headlamp.
dont ask me how but, the snow will still get in there, but not as bad if you do all of the above. ski

I put weatherstripping around the headlight, pre-filter over the sidepanel vents and hood vents, and duct tape over the vent under the windshield and in front of the oil reservior. Snow ingestion is 95% gone.

I did the fine screen deal every where I could get to, and it help a lot. Even looked cool. Just help in place with foil tape. Big Difference on the one by the oil cooler. Thanks for the tip on the weather strip around the headlight. Coming from a Vector, I was used to storing spare gloves and goggles on the cylinder head. Soaked them on the first ride.

Anyone tried the Yamaha FX Nytro Vent kit part # SMA-8GL26-PT-00 ?
Supposed to address this issue. Comes with four pre-cut/ fitted screens, retails for $57.95.
1. Does the kit work as well as pre-filter
2. Does it cost a lot more than pre-filter, or is it comparable?

AN 18" x 18" piece of SLP pre-filter will cost about $37.00 and is enough to cover the vents on a Nytro. At least the two primary upper cowl screens and the oil tank vent. I wasn't concerned with the headlight perimeter and haven't had any snow come through, but I'm using Gen II skis and the front floats high in the snow.
I'm not familiar with Yamaha's kit.

I makes me feel better when I see these posts and don't feel like the only one.
Snow gets in through any place that plastics come together. Side panels, the belly pan, etc. If you want a 100% seal, you have to close these gaps with something. The dealer used a silicone that is also used to install windshields into cars. After we had to rip that apart to do a filter change, I tried applying it myself and it didn't last due to curing issues. Next I tried the same spray-in-foam that you use to seal cracks around windows, etc. before you put the trim on. The foam is still there, but I haven't had a close inspection yet to see if it is the answer. I will follow up on it in my thread in March.
The problem is, once you get ice in there once, it screws up the formation of the panels...and the gaps become larger because they've had ice in them for so long, and the problem becomes worse. My belly pan hangs down near the front cooler by an entire inch. That's a lot to fill.

Anyone have an extra screen kit SMA 8GL26-PT-00 for sale? My dealer is having trouble locating one for me. Or do you know of a dealer that may have one in stock?
