I am going to be in the Powers/Escanaba area on the 26th and hopfully going for a ride. Will be riding with a different group during the preceding week but if anyone is in the western UP area and can help find some cool trails/off trail fun let me know.
Thanks,
Kyle

Western UP

There is limitless places to hammer powder all over the western UP.
Go up 102 and take your pick of log/fire/forestry roads. I usually go out towards the northern portion of 102 near 11 (South Boundry Road).
There are also lots of opportunities north of the ski hills on 11N. Bring a western UP map and there are lots of roads labeled. Bring friends and make sure you've got gas. Note the only way to cross the West branch of Presque Isle River is an old (no longer used) trail bridge. It is a few miles north of M28. PM me before you go and maybe I'll be up to ride! ;)!

Where is the best place to get a trail map of western UP online? I found a map but can't seam to find an 11N or 102...

Almost any place on the trail, but definitely at the Hoop n Holler tavern, northwest corner of lake Gogebic.
Or stop by my place in Wakefield, I have a bunch of 'em.

Heres a crappy online map. 102 is the next trail west of M64 and 11n is west of that. This map looks to be outdated as far as exact location of 11n but its a good general idea.

Thanks for the maps. I guess we are staying a little more towards the middle of the UP. We are north of Powers. We could trailer anywhere without a problem just need some other advice.
How do you if there is access to off trail riding? Are they state forests or anything like that? It would take us at least an hour to trailer to the wakefield area. Any advice on where to go or would like to take some fellow TYers on a ride it would be appreciated!

Not familiar with Powers. My experience around western UP shows that almost regardless of most trail condition reports, there is always ridable snow in the Porkies snow belt areas. I rode last year at the end of March. long after most guys gave up, there was snow on the South Boundry Road (11n).
As far as legal issues, it's mostly Ottawa nat'l forest. I just respect "keep out" and "no snowmobile" signs and never have had any trouble. George will let you park at "the Hoop" or Tom has alot of room across from the Bergland Bay Bar.

After studing some maps, it looks like we will meet in Bergland in the morning, ride up trail 1, west on 11, and back around on 102 to Bergland. In the mist of that I'll try to find some places to get off trail. Is there gas anywhere on that loop? Up near what looks to be the Union Bay area or white pine?

Hoop, BP in Bergland or Konteka bowling alley/bar in white pine are your only fuel stops.
PM me before you go. If I can get up there, we'll hook up.

10-4 buddy. I'm going to look into a smaller trail tank to mount to my mountain rack.
don't over-react, it's not that far for gas. I just think your group should top off before you drop off into the woods.

Just throwing it out there... If anyone else would like to come along feel free to let me know. I'll get some scheduling planed and should be a good day to go out and play. Looks like 4-8" coming the thursday and friday before so a little boondocking would be fun! Probably meet in Bergland around 9 am ish.

Just a note to any followers interested, Bergland is on Eastern Time, so lets make sure times are specified. I can let guys know shape of things after I ride this fri.

I have a group of 7 or 8 TYers going to my place near Hurley that same weekend. We can ride to 102 in about an hour plus. It sounds like you are more of an off trail guy. Fyi, 102 is a hell of a nice trail! And 11N up by the porkies was made for the four stroke yammies! I love to off trail too. Maybe we'll see ya out there!
