Update on Darting fix

Ordered something comparable I hope

If these things work I don't understand why this profile isn't molded into the skis in the first place. I assume Yamaha is attempting to provide a ski that is multi-purpose with a focus on "groomed trail" performance, but from reading a lot of posts, the stock skis are marginal at best and dangerous at worst. They really need to consider licensing a good performance ski design, using someone elses ski (a la the tracks), or budget some legal fees and copy a good ski (a la Ski-doo).

I had GYT-R plastic skis on my SX and I didn't know what darting was, but the GT definitely darts for me even after shimming.

Are you sure you ski's are lined up? The way people are sounding about this darting problem makes it really sound severe. My GT handles like a dream. I don't understand what could be set up so bad on your sled.

Ive rode my sons GT and there is hardly any darting with the stock skis, but alot of the darting depends on the snow conditions of the day. I think most people have too much ski preasure on thier skis.

Has anyone happened to have noticed that the problem is the design of the Yammy ski?

I had mine off today. Jeez, the bloody wearbar is countersunk into the ski!!!! How stupid is this? Only about 4" of the wearbar is 100% below the ski bottom.

We might as well take the wearbars off!!! It won't make no difference.

So by adding this shim, all we are a doing is BAND-AIDING a problem, not fixing it.

You are essentially forcing the rear of the skis downward, and making the wearbar make more contact to the ground....

It's like having wearbars that are 50% worn down!!!!!

I think the only solution is new skis. Yammy should step up and replace the skis. :ORC

I dont see much flaw with the skiis besides being mounted too far rearward. The prob is too much weight over the skiis. Bobb has been doing some interesting mods to his to reduce weight off the skiis all of which would and should provide positive results in other areas such as traction, tracking, and stabiity.

That's whats interesting. These ski savers and easy steer things are intended to reduce the exposed profile of the wear bear because the wear bar catching in other tracks is what causes much of the darting. I too noticed that the wear bar is recessed into the ski whic is why I chose not to install Bergstroms ski savers, the effect is already there. I am inclined to believe that the easy steers will help and that my issues are mostly finding the right balance of transfer by adjusting the control rod.

As far as the shimming, I feel that it helps and that it is better to have the wear bar as flat as possible or even a rear bias, rather than a front bias. I expect that the bar should last longer this way.

Thanks for seeing it my way!!

Do any aftermarket skiis countersink the wearbar??? My C&A's on my Thundercat DIDN'T.

I put C&A Razors on and darting still 50% left. Good transfert but i like pressure on the skis for turning... And with the shim, heavier stearing but almost no darting...

QUestion When the carbides use in the back first (because of the shims) then they will become flat (parallel to the ground) and darting will start again???

Where can you get the shims?

I cut my own little shims from an old snow flap.
3/4"x1-1/4" then siliconed them on.

i have been making my own out of 1/8" flat stock,2 inch wide, cost me about 75c for the metal today,i weld it to the carbide and bend it up around the fron t of the ski like the ski-doo style and 1 countersunk bolt thru the tip, this eliminates the darting,i usually shim the ski just so the runners will wear evenly, seen a guy today with the simmons skis wearing the front so bad it was actually wearing into the ski the runner was worn so bad in the front,i told him about the shim trick,he was gonna try it

170plus, this is a "Ski saver" not a shim, correct? I believe what mrance111 is looking for is the shim that is placed under the spindle, not under ski.

I think bergstromskegs.com sells shims but you can cut them from all sorts of materials from snow flaps to old hyfax to old belts. I cut mine from the edge of the stock track I replaced on my SX.

Just seems to me like The $13 000 sled (cdn) should be setup initially for less darting all over the place... I don't think it's just a transfer bar setup issue.. since it almost seems generalized... It should be officially adressed... I've already spent money on skis, and time on shimming, but now my steering is heavy but no darting... I could probably have been designed better in the first place...
