Upper Ball Joints Direction

I just got my front end back together last weekend but noticed that I may have put my upper ball joints on upside down. Does the collar of the ball joint go up or down? Does it matter?

By collar do you mean the raised portion round the ball socket? The factory installation is to have this raised section facing up, but since the ball is centered (or close enough) direction should not matter to the operation.

Yes I mean the collar. Wonder why the collar even exists then?

The collar is the result of a forging to retain the ball in its socket.
