I broke the upper loop of one of my control rods. I'm trying to get the guide wheel off the shaft that the upper loop of the control rod should hang on, but it won't come off. It looks like it should just slide off the shaft, but it won't budge. I am I missing something here, or is it somehow seized to the shaft? Does the -23c have something to do with it?

Don't assume I haven't missed something obvious either. I took the bolts out on both sides, raised the rear end so the skid could drop far enough to get everything off. I got the white plastic collar off and the wheel should come next.

Thanks for the help.

did you check for a snap ring holding the wheel on?

we always install these with the snapring for the wheel to the inside. that way if the bearing sticks to the shaft you can get the wheel off and then use a puller on the bearing without damaging the wheel.

I didn't check for a snap right, but I will. I would think I should have seen it, but maybe not. From what I have read, the original wheels didn't have removable bearings, so would that mean there is no snap ring?

Is it common for these bearings to stick to the shaft?

They always freeze on the shaft, and can be a pup to get off. You've got to work on it but it will come off. There is nothing holding it on. Those bearing are replaceable, always have been. 6205 bearing.

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on the best way to attack it to get it to come off?

I usually get it moving by driving the shaft, with a wooden block. Be careful not to bugger up the shaft you'll never get the new one on. Maim's idea of putting the snap ring on the inside is an excellent one. That way you can remove the ring and then remove the wheel leaving the bearing on the shaft. You could then use a puller for the bearing.

Hammering on the shaft with a block of wood worked like a charm. No snap ring though, the bearing doesn't look like it comes out. My track was extended to 136" (it's an '03) before I bought it though, so maybe that's not a stock wheel.

At any rate, thanks for the guidance, and if I can find a new control rod I'll still be riding this weekend!

In Canada the 03's and 04's did not have changeable bearing in those wheels. Also did not have changeable bearings in the outer wheels on the rear axle. They were the same as the vipers in this regard.
