Good question; I would expect that you have to remove the clutch; don't see how to do it with the clutch totally assembled. You need a special tool I think. Can someone enlighten us on this??? I have some rubber O rings and hopefully this will last for a while. I understand that the free play will not hurt anything but it sure sounds like somethings broken.

So my question is why would Yamaha design these clutches like this? Why would these bolts have so much play in them making these clutches rattle and make all kinds of noise? If the play in the rollers is not required, then why don't they come tightened down with no play? My dealer tells me it's because the weights are heavy and will make noise until after engagement. That doesn't make sense to me.

Same basic clutch as they've used for years on other models isn't it? Just that the 3 cyl 4 stroke pulses effect it differently making the rattle. It does seem like they'd design something different. That engine runs so smooth and sweet it sure would be nice not hearing that clutch.

No you dont have to take clutch apart to lube or clean ..just spray some cheap 99 cent brake cleaner fluid on clutch moving parts and wash it down good ..it removes dust good and then the Lockease with graphite will work into like a fluid and leave the dry graphite residue where ever you spray it to moving parts. ps. Keep it away from your belt and also when you spray those rollers I would spin them while wet to work graphite in good!

I agree. That engine has such a nice sound and then the clutch rattle drowns it out.

I agree also... as a matter of fact I would love to buy a new 3 cyl Yamaha (maybe in the FX chassis) but until the cluch noise issue is resolved in a permanent matter (either by Yamaha an aftermarket suplier or myself) I'm afraid my 05 Rage may be my first and last Yamaha.

That clutch would have to make WAY more noise that what it does for me to ever consider giving up my Rage ...I've had my fill of seeing much much worst things in other brand sleds! :ORC

Read woodtics thread about putting a P85 on it. SOmething I'm looking into right now. Pretty cheap fix and a better clutch too.

Let me know what you find out about the Poo clutch; you figue that its a better clutch?? I'm not disputing that I just don't know; the O rings were a pretty cheap fix but I can't vouch for longevity. Anyway really appreciate any info you find out about the P85. Thanx

I am sure Yamaha will correct the noise in time. But in realality it does not hurt anything. Yamaha sleds are quite compared to just a few years ago. Just like in the automotive industry, the quiter you make the vehicle, new noises show up that where ther all of the time. This is no big deal. It sure beats blown engines, blown belts and chain case failures. Yamaha is the best sled on the market for durability. It may not be the fastest, lightest but it sure is the most dependable and durable sled on the market to day! If you follow the thread, there are some fixes for the rattle if you need to illiminate the noise. There is nothing wronge with the Yamaha Clutch. You are going to spend far less time performing the fix for the rattle than trying to adapt a different clutch and get it set up properly for your riding style. Guys, just ride your sleds and be thankful that Yamaha built you the Best Sled on the Market.
Just my 2 cents!

Do a search under "P85" and look for woodtics thread on the P85. He PM'd me specifics on the setup, and I'm confident that it'll be right the 1st time out. From what trusted clutch tuners tell me, the P85 is more tunable anyway.
Am I going to do it? I dunno. I want to try the oring fix first too, but nobody has taken the time to post photos and details on how to do it. Nobody knows how long it will last either.

Oak,
Wont get into a war of words with you. You are Blue thru and thru and nothing will change that. I know another guy on another board who defends Poo just like you do Yamaha.
You say Yamaha will fix it in time. When and how much will IT COST US? Answer is they wont and if they did it'll cost us.
A quiet clutch is not too much to ask for, but they couldve given us a better shock on the 05 ProActive skids too -- they're not fixnig that are they?
It is a GREAT sled with a GREAT motor, but like many other sleds, it has its deficiencies.
The Yami clutch is OK, but for us who want QUIET, we want QUIET like we used to have.
Not too much to ask is it?
