I need a starter for a 2006 vector. Do you know your ignition key inserted with the plastic part of the key down, the plastic can hang up on your tank causing the starter to stay engaged untill it burns out and drains the battery leaving you stranded ? Normt

That is nasty I hate to think how much that starter will cost .

I think (?) this is a known problem... With the right dealer, Yamaha might replace your starter under goodwill.

This is a known problem. The dealer I bought mine from contacted me and told me about this problem a few months after I bought the sled. Replaced the fold over piece. Yamaha will not honour this problem as a recall. There were a few cases about this on hear a couple of years back

We just replaced the starter and relay on my friends Rage. Not sure what caused the problem so we added a light to the starter circuit, anytime the starter is running the light is on.

Glad we added the light, out ridding this weekend and the starter stayed on. He started the sled after breakfast and the light stayed on, he hit the kill switch and the sled stopped normally. When he pulled up on the kill switch the sled started on its own, the ignition switch is bad. I wonder how many starters burned up because of this problem?

Hey guys , I'm new on TY ! I'm registered on PASSION-YAMAHA which is the french version ! Tell me about this problem ... to make a LONG story long,, I own a Rage 05 that I bought in oct 06 with only 2000 kms ! Yes !!! Another testimony about that not acceptable problem from Yam !! After reaching 4700 kms ( in northern Quebec ) ( in the bush ) my machine quit !!! No pull start ! Had to tow for 1 hour to a cabine in a place called Nowhere ( St-Zénon ) Far from where my truck was parked ( Mt-Tremblant)( 2 more hours ) of sledding before reaching it ! ( totally pissed ) Driving back to pick it up ( 1 1/2 hour ) and drive back to Ottawa ( 4 hours ) An experience nobody want to have ! All this happened at the end of Feb 07 ! Starter 570.00$ at the dealer ( Wheelsport Ottawa ) Remove the engine , change the starter and removing the side engine cover to verify the starter drive inside ( making sure it is ok ) looking at the STATOR , (just looking at it !! ) I reinstall everything together ,,( total labor ,approx 10 hours ++ at least , considering it's the first time I removed a 4 stroker ) IT"S HELL !! The starter was totally fried MELTED !! Have pictures to prove it ! Tons !! This season comes up ... dec 07 , jan 08 , few kms , everythings goes well went for a ride with the boys this past week-end ( up to approx . 400kms so far , saturday night , 35 minutes before we come back , our last little break , time to go ,,,,,, the Rage does not start anymore, battery DEAD , like in DEAD !!! YES ! Mike X had a strap so I was able to start it ! Just enough juice to get back to the truck! Did some tests sunday morning (yesterday , stator charges only 11.90 volts ( reason for dying batterie ) now after only 400 kms on the motor since the starter change , have to remove the engine AGAIN to change the STATOR ! I am pis.... Lou's rage

i unfortunitely have had this happen to me as well. i bought my '05 rage last feb with 1600 miles. first trip up north with the sled it happened. we were staying in land o lakes, and took a long ride up to copper harbor and back. got to within about 2 miles of copper harbor and the sled died. dead!! it was just two of us, and my buddy was on his '07 apex. of course we didnt have a tow rope cause we ride yamahas!!! well, to shorten up the story, he had to ride into town to get a rope. he pulled me into town and left the sled and started the ride back to land o lakes on his apex. i made it to houghton before i had enough. got a hotel room, and he picked me up the next morning. fortunitely, yamaha covered the whole thing under warrenty, and they even gave me a little money cause we were gonna go up the next weekend and they couldnt get me a starter in time. so they gave me some cash to use to rent a sled. i was very impressed with the way my dealer and yamaha worked with me!!!

Hi again ! You were very well served ! But was your rage bought new ? Did you have a 2 year warr. ? Has far as mine goes , it was an 05 bought in late 06 used ! But it was in prestine condition ! At the time it had brken down , 3 month after , had contacted Yamaha Canada and they were only interested in saving their own #*$&@ ! ( sorry for verbal abuse ! ) They had no compassion and refused to acknowledge their problem with a lot of their ELECTRICAL problems ! MY starter , my stator , ign. switches , main fuse block relay etc.etc. It is only after you start reading about other peoples stories that there is a certain to yamaha on my part !!! Good luck to all of us ! Lou`s rage
