Viper Lands In Manitoba

Hopefully the exaust getting cooled a little in the tunnel will be enough to avoid the under hood fires that happen so frequently on the 1200s.
(A little runnig in the Bulrushes and they like to light up.)

The amount of track unsupported by only two rear wheels scares me.... Looks like it REALLY should have 4 wheels to give the outer 4" of track more support, and ease the wear of the sliders.

Check out the 4th wheel kit thread. Lots of good discussion on that.
Yes I have already looked and there are quite the options for fourth wheel kits.

I wonder if having the rad and the exahust under the hood would cause toubles with heat. Just worried about heated clutches causing problems with belt life like the Cat Turbo's.

The problems with the cats was with their clutches, should not be an issue with yammie clutches

Their clutches were one thing, but clutch alignment was another. The jack shaft moved with primary, which played with the chain tension on the other end of jack shaft. Cat put on some kind of auto tensioner for chain, but it seems like many issues in chain case were from fluctuating tension on the chain. Hopefully Yamaha uses their own billot gears and not the cat powder forged gears. The alignment issues probably won't be an issue with only 135hp, but modded Vipers will probably experience allot of the same issues the 1100 turbo owners faced with power up kits.
I wish Yamaha would disclose all the mechanical updates that were done to the Viper.

Well, not since the 1992 Vmax-4...a binding, inconsistent secondary almost destroyed it's reputation during the release season.

Also, I do not for a second believe that the Yamaha clutches are much better than the cat clutches, especially not from a design point of view. Ever heard about roller secondary...? If cat had clutching problems, it is all about flexing chassis components.

Yammi clutches are much better then cats currently. Have three friends with pro cross and between them the have had 4 complete primaries and two secondaries replaced under warranty and one of them was just dropped at the dealer because his are making a banging sound. Cats belt issues are Chinese made clutches nothing more.

X2 to a point since there was and is problems with the Cat clutches that a roller does not fix.Flex and the TCL that forced secondary to move with it has to be the main culprit. It is gone on the Viper! Obviously heat is what wrecks belts but the root cause is not heat itself. Its what CAUSES the heat that is blowing belts. The cats I was riding with which blew belts the clutch temps felt with hand were no hotter than my Phazer clutches. I had the chance to check and even the very upset cat owner agreed temps were the same. Only diff was my belt has over 5000 mi on it and I was leading.

Thanks good to know, I never had any issues with the clutching on my 92, 94 or 96 VMAX-4 nor did my riding buddies, but it certainly doesn't mean that others didn't have. My only issue with that sled was FABULOUS POWER....LOUSY GAS MILAGE. :sled1:

I think it was 1995 when Yamaha first went to a reverse cam secondary. Since then, they slowly got better each year getting them dialed in better. When yamie 4-strokes came, Yamaha knew how to mount the engine in relation to a fixed floating secondary. I remain sceptic when I see the cat setup in the viper so hopefully I'm wrong.
