I found this on McMaster-Carr's website. You can get (10) of these for about 1/3 the cost for just one from the speed shops that are selling a single fancy billet aluminum screw. They're so cheap you could carry an extra 1 or 2 with you incase you lose the one you take out of your seat.

I had the fancy aluminum billet screw, and it broke off. I bought a M6 flat-sided thumbscrew at the hardware store for less than $4.00; it works perfectly, and because of the flat sides, I can get a grip on it even when my fingers are cold/numb.

I have not had a screw in my seat for the past 4000 miles and have had zero issues.
Just saying.

You are probably right; if whatever it was that you hit, hits hard enough to dislodge the seat, you probably have already been thrown off the sled and don't need the seat anymore. I just feel better having the screw there, even if it isn't really doing much! In my defense, I did take the two screws out of the nose; they really don't seem to do much, and I can't even begin to imagine what a pain it would be to remove them on the trail if you were trying to get under the hood to replace a blown fuse!
