I pre-ordered a Hurricane turbo and have been thinking about the gearing. The stock gearing seems pretty steep to me for 190hp. Switching from 24/50 to say a 24/42 seems like it would " calm down" the sled out of corners, make it "drive" off better and not spin the power out the back and actually add MPG's. On the other hand I really don't need gearing for 125mph as I would probably never approach those speeds. I believe 24/42 is stock gearing for the 2014 turbo Cat. Any thoughts or real world testing done on turbo gearing? I am leaning toward the higher side of the chart....

You may not want to go 125 MPH but you probably need the gearing for it or maybe more.
My Turbo Apex is geared up 2 teeth on the top which would be equivilant pretty much to you gearing down 4 on the bottom. It needed all of that to not blow out the track on hard acceleration.
I think I would contact Allen Ulmer for some advice if I were you. From what I have read here that the Viper Turbo guys and Allen have been posting, there are a lot of of gains to be had by changing the belt and doing some clutch work which of course gets real complicated for clutching & gearing when you add the Turbo.
You are on the right track by gearing up, but I think with the Viper clutching it is more complicated than just that.

2011 nytro xtx tha I drove a few years back on a "demo" ride..bone stock would do 101-102..no different than our vipers, or atleast mine in box stock form. With mpi 180 supercharger and stock gearing it did 118. Personally to me it sounds kinda pointless to go with a turbo but then try to gear it to calm the sled down. With mine I'll be shooting more for a big gain in mid range pull. 0-60 the stock viper is as quick as anything out there. I too don't care about 125mph..I do expect my viper to be in the 115 range on perfect conditions with stock gearing. Maybe there is issues with the clutches on the vipers maybe there isn't..all I know is that from past experience, the viper is no different than the nytros were in stock form atleast if the clutches are working somewhat properly. Maybe there r some small clutch tricks to get u 1-2 more mph top speed but ultimately all this sled needs for more speed is more hp to shift out the clutches

By " calm the sled down" I mean not blowing the power out the back. It would be useless to have all that power to just spin like mad out of every corner. I think I am leaning towards 24/42 gearing

I gotta think that is going to depend a lot on how the clutching is setup. I'm sure it could be calmed down by changing gearing but I would say that loading your engine harder through the clutching is going to solve that issue if it truely is an issue when the time comes. Any idea if hurricane or mpi have done gearing changes on their turbo sleds? That would tell a lot since they're the ones building and setting up these things

I talked with Dave at Hurricane Performance. He said stock gearing will get you too 105 with power to spare. He has a clutch kit that pulls great to there. If you want more top end will need to change gears or i think ulmer is doing some mill work on the clutches to get a little more. Dave has gear and chain available and can help. One guy i talked too is happy on Wisconsin tight trails with stock gearing. Another i saw geared up and loves it on the lake.

Not sure who it was but there was someone posting on here earlier that was doing top speed turbo testing and from what I remember reading I think they were at 115ish with stock gearing and then some of the gearing changes they did got them in the 120 range. I don't remember exact numbers but I do remember they were right around 115 with stock gearing and proper clutching
