Thinking of upgrading from my 2012 nytro rtx to a viper xtx. Is it really worth it loved how tough and reliable the nytro was but lacked handling and just so much effort to turn it. Lots of inside ski lift also. What add ons need to be done to beat 800 e tecs?? If possible love the four stroke reliability.

My bone stock Viper has beaten 2 different E Tec 800's for about 500 feet. Its does get top ended by the 800. I would think with some clutching and maybe a can in would stay up there longer. Corner to corner this thing rocks. I sure DONT miss my Apex.
You'll love it compared to the nytro but will take boost to beat a 800 e-tec. 500' is not considered a race IMHO.

That honestly all depends on how well the etec runs. My buddy with a 14' renegade has his setup perfect. He has a clutch kit and it is spot on everytime and the sled hooks up great! He will consistently beat my viper. My other buddy with a 12' xrs has maybe 1-2 mph more top speed but he has yet to beat me in a 1000' drag race. My sled and the renegade both have same amount of studs, xrs has 192 studs so all the sleds are hooking up good. Both skidoos are 800 etecs. Honestly if you want to beat them everytime then a turbo is the easiest and most reliable way to go. Intake, full exhaust and programmer against a well running etec and you will have a toss up every time. Stock for stock the etec is not doubt faster and quicker from a dead stop but it really doesn't take much to get the vipers to run fast

Not to mention you might as well plan on crank seals every other year on that e-tec. Maybe every year if you ride enough. There is something to be said about the lack of maintenance these four stroke require.
race the Etec to 5,000 miles and see who's still running.

depends on how long you expect to keep it and how much you want to spend. Xtra warranty is probably more important on the etec for motor issues but it is also important on the viper for the a-cat issues. If you are only going to jump on and ride it and sell in a few years while it is on warranty go with the etec but if you want to hang onto it for 5 years and spend some more cash to get it to perform you will probably have the best of all worlds. I have ran with 800 pteks and my xtx is faster out of the hole but real lazy on top end. We used same amount of fuel on long runs. My xtx has about same top end as my 600 backcountry. If you do mostly trail riding don't go with the un coupled skid and fox floats. Best to ride both and then talk to people who have dealt with the dealer and make your own decision. good luck

Its going to take more than a little something to beat a well sorted 800 anything from 2013 on up. Top speed aint its selling point. Handling, wind protection and ride quality make up for it in my opinion.
I spent a Saturday early in the season riding with a couple lunatics on an 800 etec and a 800 pro r. I could stay right on their tail and more than once had a chance to get around them. I too suffered from ski lift as the pro-r did. Didn't notice the etec doing that.
Flat out the pro r runs between a 100-105. I would guess the doo about the same, maybe a little quicker. My sled has never done better than 95 and it only did it once. I think there is some cheap hp to be had with a 8dn belt change, some slippery hi fax and another set of rollers in the skid. Maybe enough to run down a Monday or Friday built 800.
Upside is that when you have 5000 miles on a Viper its not even near its half life and its still pretty damn fast for what it is. The rest of the sled might be junk but the motor will be running fine.
