Voltmeter install?

Has anyone installed a voltmeter in their sled yet? With my new engine, I'll be installing a water temp. gauge to keep an eye on things, but after my experience with the stator meltdown last year, I would also like to keep an eye on the charging system also. Has anyone installed a voltmeter, or are RX charging problems so rare that its not really necessary?

Its an extremely rare problem. Remember that yours was so weird that it can be linked directly to the complete replacement of the whole engine. I don't think that there's any question about whether the contamination caused by the stator destruction is what caused the rest of the damage. And also, given that your electrical failure came AFTER the whole thing was already trashed, it wouldn't seem to serve well as an advanced warning device. If you really do feel the need to put on a voltmeter, just be sure to connect it AFTER the main relay, otherwise it'll suck your battery dry even when its turned off. Voltmeter install would be real simple - they just have 2 wires, available just about everywhere.

Thanks LB. I wasn't thinking so much about the stator issue as I was wondering about the rest of the charging system. But I will probably just stick to the temp. gauge and call it good.

Well, the whole charging system is real simple. AC lines come out of the motor, go to rectifier and voltage regulator (which are combined - that thing in the bottom of the nose), from there straight into the battery. The ignition system is much more sensitive, and there's not a whole lot you can do to monitor it, except observe when it fails, and even that is rare - as long as you have properly dealt with the 2 places in your 03 where the wires get chaffed - those 2 tiny wires in the nose, and the beige? wire around the steering column.
