Check with your dealer, there is a new TSB that came out with a new part number for lower ball joints. They can be replaced is they are loose. This is not a recall, just a 90 code and they are coverd regardless of warranty status. All '08 Nytros and '07 and '08 Phazers are covered.

I checked the ball joints last night and they are totally shot (less than 900 miles). I called my dealer to complain since I just had my sled in last week for an oil change and visual inspection. I specifically asked them to check all tech bulletins; the only one they stated was one for the wire harness.
My dealer just called me this morning and informed me that Yamaha issued the Tech Bulletin yesterday (11/24) for the lower ball joint issues. He admitted he knew about the problem but Yamaha had told him not do anything until the replacment parts became available. He has parts ordered and will call when they come in.
A word of caution to all of those who say they have checked them and they look fine. I thought so as well until I took the skis off (to put on my new Curve skis). It wasn't until all of the wieght was off the ball joint that I was able to get it to move. There is at last 1/2" verticle play in the joint. Everyone who hasn't already replaced them should check again!
BTW - the tech bulletin was just updated for the wire harness issue and they will need to fix that issue as well.

i'm not talking about spraying anything. i am talking about grease in a tube or can, forced into the joints by hand and pivoting the joint to coat the whole ball.
and as far as failure without any lube in there from the get go, i am guessing this is the reason for higher failure rates. IF they would have been treated like this from day one, they MAY have lasted longer. not saying it is the be all end all but, no lube on a pivoting surfaces leads to failure at a rapid pace. alittle lube would have helped is all i am saying. ski

What is the wire harness issue?

The dealer said there is a wire harness that if it gets in the wrong location can melt. They had checked mine and said it was OK. Now they said Yamaha is making them put a clamp on it to keep it away from the heat source. I assume it can move and lay against the engine or muffler.

Really....... well then I guess I'll have to add this to the list. Does anyone have any other info on this? where to look? I'm assuming towards the back of the engine.

I greased mine and it made no difference.

I called three dealers in Manitoba, and all stated they have not heard any problems with the ball joints, or have they replaced any. One shop checked yesterday for a bulletin and did not find one. I think mine are still tight but I will have them checked this weekend when serviced.

My warranty expires on 11/30 and I told the dealer I wanted to make sure it was done before then. He told me that they would be replaced regardless of whether or not the warranty had expired.

Dealer told me to do the absolute opposite and not put and grease on the ball joints just keep them clean They are sent this way on purpose. He explained when lubricants are applied there is more of a chance to pick up fine dirt and sand which make their way inside the ball joint and wear them down quicker.
Makes sense to me!
