On top of that one of the guys giving legal advice is our UP's State Police Capt. / Commander out of Marquette. He has given good advice..

Just fyi, I'm not a police officer.

I know that......his "handle" on here is "johnboy"........and I'm personally acquainted with him.....

There may possibly be some decent news in our immediate future regarding the USFS arsehole........local rumor has it he may not be around here much longer.......supposedly his immediate supervisor out of Escanaba has already been terminated in part due to some of his shenanigans......even his own brother has described him to some locals as a "loose cannon"........you got to wonder how the federal government let someone this mentally unbalanced to carry a lethal firearm????

I'm pretty sure he is sittng in our parking lot right now at the hotel. A guy just came in bitching he got a ticket for not wearing a helmet while backing his sled off the trailer. A quick look out my window and sure enough there is a government truck sitting in the corner of the lot.

If it is a US Forrest Service officer writing a ticket in a motel parking lot, the motel better be in the US Forrest or he has no jurisdiction. Tell the guy to fight it if the officer's name is Cote. If he needs an attorney referral, get his contact information to me and I'll hook him up. I've got a friend representing 4 or 5 clients currently fighting Cote tickets for various offenses.

I'll see if I bump into the guy again. All I've heard since we arrived today is bad stories about this Rouge Ranger from several people.

I had a similar problem in Newberry a few years ago for breaking a curfew by 8 minutes that i knew NOTHING about. No signs, no notices, not even a printed disclaimer on the map. When i told hotel owner about getting a ticket he said that they were having major problems with that particular officer. Hotel owner wanted me to come back up and fight the ticket, but i wasn't driving 10 hours to fight a $140 ticket. The sad truth is because of my experience i vowed to never ever go back to Newberry and to this day haven't. Some rogue elements may see this behavior as a "money maker" but in the end it just paints a bad light on their particular area and guys like me will simply refuse to spend our money in those areas ever again. I'm not saying their shouldn't be some type of law and order in this sport but there is a right way and a wrong way of enforcing it. Most of us aren't hardcore criminals or up there to destroy local property. Most of us just want to enjoy our sport in a respectful manner and shell out large sums of cash to the riding areas local establishments to do it. As a business person i know for a fact that RE-PEAT business is the bread and butter of any successful venture. I am always taking new guys to the places i love to ride and in turn they have all started taking their friends to those same areas i introduced them, staying in the same hotels, eating at the same restaurants. THAT is how you maintain a small business in small communities. One bad experience like this guy had and the WHOLE community will suffer long term.

More and more glad I spent my riding money in northern MN this year. Have only seen two DNR all year. One riding his sled on a RR grade and the other at an intersection checking registration. NO harassment whatsoever!

I just found out that the Federal Public Defender's Office may be able to represent anyone who chooses to fight tickets issued by Officer Cote, U.S. Forrest Service Officer. The tickets are classified as petty offenses, and the district court sets pretrial days once every three months to process them. If you get a ticket from Officer Cote, please call 906-226-3050, which is the Marquette Office of the Federal Public Defender's Office. Regardless of your income level, they may be able to represent you. Pass the word to anyone you know who gets the tickets.

I've also heard the US Attorney's assistants have dismissed a lot of his tickets when people have challenged them.

Sounds like a real Dandy! Nice PDF Fandango. A Coo Coo Coo, I love it I love it!, I'm in hot pursuit!

You do not have to wear a helmet on private property, however i have seen this happen in the stageing lot

I was just going to ask if this guy worked in the newberry area a few years ago. A friend and I got 2 tickets in one weekend from him for bs reasons and vowed never to go back. Now we do all we can to drive around newberry. How ever 2 years ago we had no choice to go through as my friend was running out of gas. He ran out so we towed him 1/4 mike down the side street to the station and you guessed it, he pulled in lights on to wright us up. Just then a state police officer pulled in and shewed him away for us. Haven't been back through there since.
