Hey guys,
Can't believe we are paying for water...

Less than two weeks ago i emptied the tank completely while I was installing copper doughnuts,

I did this work up at cottage, filled two 20L cans in city got a coffee and headed up, after I finished the work filled the sled right to the top, had some fuel left in one can didn't all go in, headed back up today went to get the cans in garage and guess what, ICE...

The empty one sounded like there was glass in side, I dropped it on the floor, what ever was left inside was frozen solid to inside of gas can, the other can which had probably 2L or so sounded like there was a rock in there so I took a look and there it was floating around ICE and a lot too,

Who knows how much went in the sled,

I also seen a lot of ice in diesel,

Come on... That's unreal...

Isn't ethanol great? Thanks to this wonderful thing, it can suck in the moisture right out of the air and phase separate from the gasoline. Other benefits are lower MPG and power as well as leaning mixtures (for 2 strokes can be a killer).

Seriously, it can happen in smaller towns but I thought that pumps are supposed to be equipped with a filter or something to remove water because of the ethanol? I've seen them on some of the older pumps where the filter was mounted right on the hose connection and it did say something about water removal on the spin-on can.

If you do get water at a particular gas station, maybe complain to the company head office. They might give you some coupons or something.

What gas station did you use?

I am a bit choosy when it comes to gas and refuse to use certain stations if I can?
I do prefer Shell to most others but I think most comes from the same refinery so I am probably just fooling myself?

Shell 91 and ultramar premium do not contain ethenol. I make sure to store all my stuff with this gas even if it calls for regular.

Its one reason I used Isopropol in my sleds for years. Station here put over two gallons of water in a car. Damaged all the injectors. This was in the summer.

Now for a funny story. When we where just kids still in high school back in the 70's we used to fill up jerry cans and leave them freeze before we dumped them in our sleds. That way the water never got in our tanks. This was way before ethanol and even before isopropol.

We can blame everything on ethanol if we want but this has been going on for years. Sounds more like a service station with a problem that should be told and then avoided. For years we never filled up at one station in town because of water in gas. They dug up their tanks and replaced them no more problems. Tanks where rotten and leaking gas out and water in. Not saying that is the problem here but there are many reasons why water gets in gas.

And watch out for Petro Canada where they sell Ultra 94 (former Sunoco stations). Those stations have ethanol in all their grades. That's what they use to boost the octane. Just for that, I don't trust Petro Canada at all.

X2 I will not use Irving gas unless I absolutely have to. I have seen alot of problems with their gas.

Water in the gas is very prevalent around here as well. There is a product called water eliminator which does a decent job of removing the offending H20. We used to use them in our gas cans. Nothing like opening the fuel pump on a bravo and removing an ice cube.

I buy all my gas in cans even though I only live 6 blocks from the gas station and 2 more blocks to the trail and we can sled in town.
Before 06 and ethanol the 100 mesh screens in my 10 cans would gather at least a table spoon of frost and some times, early fall fuel, alot more frost.
Now no frost but as before there is alot of crap that the screens keep in the cans. I rinse out the cans about twice a season and can't believe the crap the screens keep from going in the sleds, quad and truck when hunting. I buy gas at home and 2 other cities. They all have crap in the fuel.
As for the filters one station told me they remove them or punch them out cause they plug up to often.
No wonder we have problems.

My dad borrowed my truck the other day its a diesel. For once he actually put fuel back in. Driving to work the other day and it started cutting out and missing. Got to work, drained my water seperator into a foam cup to see how much water was in it. Was probably about 60% diesel, 20% water and 20% must have been gasoline because the cup melted. (Straight diesel will not melt the foam) Sure enough he bought fuel where i told him NOT to.
