Weight Difference

The wife is currently running an 03 viper er. She is thinking Apex GT now. Is their a lot of weight difference betwen the two sleds? Does anyone know the dry weight of an 03 Viper er? Thanks

Are you sure it is your wife that wants the Apex GT? 8)

Don't know the dry weights, but someone will know or it has been posted before. To be honest, if she is happy with the performance of her Viper S then the Vector is a good choice because the handling is very similar. The Vector feels lighter when cornering versus the RX-1. It definately takes less effort to turn a Vector than an RX-1.

Wants a forward rider position and wants to lose the throttle thumb. Likes the REV riding platform but is done with 2 strokes.

Thanks for the links. I would sooner pay more money to keep her happy when she is sledding. Which in turn makes me happy. Now don't get me wrong their will be time to time when I borrow it. I was able to test ride the apex and attack yesterday. She could not make it. Steering was my concern. Seemed to be pretty easy. Easier than my REV.

I think that the Viper was right around 500 pounds dry.
You know, if you wife likes her Viper but wants something more rider-foreward, perhaps she would like the Nytro?

ST98, I have ridden the 06 sleds and currently own an 05 vector.
Get the Apex trust me. The ER should be just fine unless she likes black (GT).
The vector is sweet but the rider forward Apex (not as radical as a REV) is a huge advancement.
That Nytro is intended as a ditch banger and for a lighter weight rider could be harsh on bumpy trails and it is the older Deltabox chassis and it is the only 06 ride to not have the magical monoshock.

weight I am pretty sure the Viper was 535 and the Apex is about 548 as I recall. The Vector is I think the heavier 06 sled, check Yamaha motor web site for that.

I have been told by a rider who rode an '06 for nearly 200 miles that it was leaps and bounds better than his '05 RX. He felt more confident on the sled and it was easier to handle. Wouldn't worry about the weight of the sled, its handling characteristics outperform that so it is not noticed. I wouldn't consider the Fox float shocks for the simple reason of the shock failing and there is no spring to support your sled, therefore you cannot ride it back home.

I test rode the Apex and the Attack yesterday. It felt a little heavier than my rev but the apex steered a whole lot easier. Just wanted to see the comparison in the weights. Overall it was a great sled. I never considered the nytro with her weight she would be bucked out into the brush on the first bump.

Viper ER weighs 518 Apex ER weighs 551 but the Viper has a 12 gallon tank vs 10 so add about 14 lbs to the full wet weight and you are looking at about 19lb difference when you factor in the extra gas the viper will carry when full. Very minimal difference and as you know the Apex feels light and has good leverage on the bars. She'll love it.

Thanks Deltabox. My mind is made up and I am going for the apex er for her. Well after she sits on one it will be made up. Of course I will have to test ride it when it comes in.

Why don't you give up on knocking the Floats, do you really think Yamaha would use them if they were not confident.

Jim
If I were to be buying an RTX, the FIRST thing I would do is replace those Floats with a set of GYT-R remote res clickers.
A couple of my friends race ATV motocross with their Honda TRX450Rs. Their quads had Fox Floats on them last season, but this year they wont be running the Floats. They have a set of Works remote res clickers that they will be running this year.
The reason: there was 1 race last year when the air bag inside the shock (the one that serves as the spring) basically exploded towards the end of a moto, a caused one of my friends a chance at a win. Also, they have told me that you are almost constantly adjusting the air pressure inside the shock because temp changes have a drastic effect on the "spring" tension.
I think the biggest reason that Yamaha went with the Floats on the RTX is to get the weight down as low as they can. I think that Yamaha wanted the bragging rights of saying, "Hey look, our 1000cc 4-stroke is LIGHTER than Doo's 1000cc 2-stroke". The Floats save about 10 pounds over the HPG shocks that they ER has.
I think that a lot of people will do like I said I would do, and swap out the Floats for the GYT-R Ohlins.

I have not heard one of the riders complain about the floats in fact quite the opposite is most commonly heard. Why don't you ask Chris from Yamaha as he had them on his Turbo.

Jim

Im leaning toward the nitro but am also worried a little about the floats from 97 to 03 i bought a new cat every year riding as much as 5700 miles a year every year the fox shocks, then act shocks would blow out or break,i have little confidence in the fox products.
