Hey everyone, I rode my 03 RX about 70 miles today and when I got home and unloaded it I rode it around my yard and it started making a weird noise by the secondary. I know the 03 had the jackshaft bearing problem but I didnt know if it would have a noise to it? Sounds like something is dry if that makes any sense at all. It has 1900 miles on it, I have some play in th secondary on the shaft but there isnt any play in the shaft, clutch side or brake side. When I grab the secondary and move it back and fourth it has about 2 inches of turn before the chain catches and moves the track. Any help would be great, Im hoping it may be the secondary and not the bearings to keep me going.
Thanks for all the help as usual![Banghead :o| :o|](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/banghead.gif)

corrosion has no mile limit sadly. Does the bearing feel warm to the touch? I would remove the secondary, remove the snap ring and just take a small screwdriver and carefully pop the seal out and inspect/clean and repack with grease. Would do the same with the left side drive bearing.

never had it done to an 03? consider yourself LUCKY! that your not 100 miles from home. did your speedo stop or mess-up yet? Don't ride anymore till you fix-it
Thanks for the suggestions! I didnt notice if the speedo stopped working, the noise had me pre occupied! I have never searched for the bearings, is the brake side in the chaincase? I am going to tackle it this weekend, hopefully just taking the seal off and repacking would be great if it will work but if not Ill look into putting the updated bearing kit in it, thanks for all the help as always ![4strokes :4STroke: :4STroke:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/4strokes.gif)

I would think if the bearing is making noise its too late to repack it. I would replace it and repack the ones that are not making any noise before they do. I would also tighten up your chain a bit to get rid of some slack just use your fingers to tighten the idler up a bit.
Thanks Sled Dog,
it does seem to have some excessive slack. Ive searched this entire forum looking for some pics of what the bearings actually look like or a schematic, I found some for the chain case but not the secondary side. Thanks

This should help http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=52677 , it's from the Apex forum but it should be what you need, at least for the clutch/speedo side.
Thanks Crewchief47, that link was perfect. Just was wondering once that snap ring is out, can the bearing be tapped out or is there a colar retainer behind it? And the upgrade everyone talks about is it just bearings for an 04 Rx1? thanks everyone

I can't be sure on the 03-04 upgrade, never had to deal with it personally.
On the newer sleds, there is a spanner nut on the inside which pulls a tapered sleeve into the bearing to lock it on the shaft. you remove the nut and then need to push the sleeve out towards the clutch to free up the shaft. I haven't had to do one with the chaincase still together but in theory you should be able to pop it.
I'm not sure what the 03's had that needed updating.

it was a different locking coller. Never understood the prob with the first one. seems to work just fine, just get it tight. I've been running the stock one with no probs, changed it out at 5 grand, just keep up the grease after each season , no worrys then
Well after further investigating, I noticed my speedo pick up gear a little shiny, took the bearing cap off and my drive shaft bearing exploded. Does anyone know if the speedo pick up is replaceable? it has about 1/8th wear from the gear rubbing due to the bearing. And can anyone tell me what size the torx set screws are? I need to buy the socket style torx set, as always thanks for the help and pray for snow!

Speedo sensor is replaceable! Try to get a good used one if you can i think they were over $100 when i had to buy a new one. The torx set screws are T15-T20 i forget which one, someone will clear it up for you.
