Wondering what's a good gps to buy? I would be happy with a hand held version instead of a mounted one. Tell me what you guys are using? Price and whys good about it? Thanks.

Garmin Montana - It is pricey but it is awesome.

Savable profiles with unique Maps - Topo/ATV/Snowmobile/Motorcycle etc.
Downloadable "Birdseye View" images for the areas you ride in. (see actual google earth type images)
Waterproof/Dustproof
Works and charges in freezing temps
Many mounting options and hand held
Camera with GPS tagging on some models

I have been using one for a few years and it has been dropped, submerged, cooked, frozen etc., it is a fantastic navigational device.

I am using a garmin hand held unit with a ram mount on my sled. works pretty well. cannot tell you the price as it was a gift from my brother and I forget the model. it auto shuts down when the sled is off and with it running, the screen will stay running on bright all the time.

I have a Garmin Zumo 350 which is a motorcycle GPS. They are expensive, but they are built to take the vibrations of riding and also they are waterproof. The screen is bright enough to see in the sunlight and you can operate it with gloves on. I don't know if I'd spend the money for one special for my sled, but I already had it for my bike, so all I had to do was mount it and download the Vt Vast trail maps. There are others on here who have had good luck with Garmin Nuvi's, which are very reasonably priced.

I would be using it pretty much all year as I spend all year on my grizzly also so it would be a great investment. I'll have to look into some of these models. Thanks guys

I agree. I've owned many many gpsr's of all types since 1995. This Montana is awesome on the machine. Nice screen. The rugged mount works well on a Ram mount to the riser. Garmin uses good quality materials like high end Automotive grade wiring so it doesn't turn brittle and break in the cold with vibration. Touch screen icons are easy to use with heavy gloves on. A great menu of many options for complete customization of the unit.

The Montana is probably the best option if price is not a variable in your buying equation. I had an Oregon and quite frankly it met all of my needs and was very reliable. That unit (a 400 series) should set you back around $180). Zumo would also be a good choice.

i got a garmin nuvi off of craigs list 40 bucks. so i figured if it got ruined no big deal works pretty good to

I have the garmin Oregon 450 with the back road map in it. The map is is very detailed shows snowmobile trails, logging roads, even smaller beat paths . Had it on my last sled with the ram mount(venture) and it worked great I also bought the 12v adapter so I never needed to change the batteries. When I have a chance I will be installing it on my Viper. For everything ram mount, gps, map, 12v plug in I think I was 350$ delivered to my door. I got it from GPS CITY out west super fast shipping. I have a ram mount on my boat also for the gps for the summer months

Garmin Nuvi 500 or 5550 (waterproof but tough to find), Garmin Zumo series or any other Nuvi series that you can get cheap. Like the other poster said...if it craps out you're not out a lot of $$. You can get water proof/resistent cases for them as well.

I found gps city has good deals on the montana sometimes. I got the one without a camera to save some money. It also doubles as my car GPS, makes it a bit easier to pay that much for it lol, though you do need to buy the maps for it.
