Have an RX1 2003. 6000kms. Burns 1/2 litre oil (less than 1/2 Quart in 750km (470 miles) Is this normal ?
No leaks to be seen any where. Exhaust is clean no blue smoke etc. Where could it be gioing > Rings , valve guides , valve seals ?
MAcjhine runs good except seems to be down on RPM. (9500)

If you get 1000 miles before the light turns on from full that is normal.

My dealer says 1 quart per 1000 miles on the 2003 rx-1. Mine does.

Not to steal the thread, ok may sort of, but once the light comes on I have two questions. 1. How much oil should it take to fill it back up and 2. Is there any approximation as to how much is left or how far can you go before you have serious problems?

do the carbon clean to it. it will get better. I think it is explained in the tech section.
Don't keep topping it off. wait for the light. I find the consumption is lower that way.
Also, make sure your crankcase vent line to the air box has a slit in it. By now that should have been done, I think it was a recall on the 03. If that line freezes full of moisture, your oil consumption goes up. I noticed that on saddle bag trips in cold Northern Ontario.

Do a SeaFoam or RingFree shock treatment. Then run RingFree in it all the time. Once you get the Carbon out of it with the shock treatment, running a little RingFree all the time helps keep the carbon out. Directions for the shock treatment are on the products' bottles.

So the slit in the air box vent tube is suppose to be there.I repaired it thinking it should not be

Len,
To run the reccommended dose of the Yamaha ring-free to prevent the carbon buildup (1 oz per gallon), you would use 2 bottles of this stuff in 3 tanks of gas. At the current cost of 87 octane gas, the total cost of gas 3 tanks of gas is about $57 dollars. The cost of ring-free is about $17 a bottle so therefore adding $34 to the cost of the fuel. This is a ridiculous additional cost. The problem with most of these types of additive is that below a specific dose, they are worthless. Now Seafoam only costs about $5 a can so for the same 3 tanks of gas, the additional cost would only be $10., still a 25% adder to fuel costs.
My 03 had been consuming about 1 qt. of oil in 1600-1800 miles in previous seasons. I ran the shock treatment of the Yamaha ring-free additive then 1 oz of Seafoam per gallon of gas last week. I put over 700 miles on the sled and there was no reduction in oil consumption, i used about 1/3 of a quart in 700 miles of riding. Also, the engine oil stayed very clean, virtually no change in color. This tells me I did not have a carbon deposit issue and my oil consumption is as low as it is going to get. I am going to continue to run Seafoam in it along with ONLY 87 octane gas. I am going to run 1 oz. of Seafoam per gal. of gas every other tank. Seafoam will keep the carbs clean also. Seafoam is also much less expensive if you buy it by the gallon rather than the small cans.
