What is verdict (closing tunnel hole) ???`

What is the verdict regarding closing off the rear tunnel hole?? I have 400 miles on my FX and the amount of ice in the tunnel is realy bad! The ice buyilds to a point that the rear suspension can only travel thru 6" instead of 16".


I realy want to close the hole, but I need to know if this will cause the rear trim pieces around the muffler to melt (or the seat).

Please let me know how this has worked out for those of you who have closed the hole.

i have 500 mi. on mine now and i think i'm going to keep open until yamaha can explain either way to close or not to close, i would hate to see the plastic or heat burn up from the exhaust

My dealer closed the hole no charge before I even rode my sled. No problems at all. Go for it !

what did he use, it won't void the warranty? why did yamaha do it in the first place then?

I'v got a call from my dealer today asking if I could bring in my fx. They should take photos of the tunnel closing and also pic's of any ice build up inside tunnel. Reason was that the reps from Yamaha Japan are coming on a visit on monday and they wanted to see how this mod worked and if it helped on the icebuild issue. (pics taken show no ice inside tunnel)

There was som slush on top of tunnel from snow hitting the muffler. (condition 2ft with powder, and still snowing . This sled runs under the snow in this conditions) But at least there is no ice build up inside tunnel any more

It cant wait to here from them what they think of this mod and also if I should have any concerne about angine mailfunction because of no exhaust cooling.

Will post the verdict if they let me know what they concluded.

I just closed my tunnel but haven't tried it yet. will be studding it next week without tunnel protectors. I bottomed the suspension to it's limit and there was still plenty of room. I would never bottom it that far anyway.

I have read that thread and all the others. It's just that I had a 300 pound guy on the sled( I'm 150) and two people in the back pushing down as hard as they could. The track was still a good three inches from the back of the tunnel. The running boards were practically hitting the ground. The only way I see it hitting is if I jump and land on the back wheels of the track and I don't do much jumping. I will try it out and if I have any problems I'll just add the protectors to the rear of the tunnel. Trial and error

You really need to think about track ballooning. If you don't use tunnel protectors I guarantee you will be sorry.............
