I started breaking in my 2007 Apex GT on 87 octane, i have about 300 miles on it now (bought it end of season). I was just wondering, it says to run 87 in the manual i believe, but is anyone running premium/super (93 Octane)? Do you notice a difference in power? Does it run better?

What are you guys running?

I ran 87 ONLY. I have heard you will lose power going to a higher octane. Just keep running the 87.

The higher octane will possible make your machine run hotter and you don't want that.

NO, it would run cooler

Why would it run cooler with a higher performance fuel?

There have been several threads relating to this topic, with answers from people much more knowledgable than my self. Bottom line, 87 burns faster than 93. 93 WILL burn cooler than 87, thereby reducing the potential for detonation. This is the primary reason for higher octane, detonation. If I remember correctly, several answers were accompanied by dyno results and time slips to back up the justification that 87 makes more power. The need for premium was much more prevalent in the older air-cooled sleds because of heat in the motor. I will search for this info and post links later today.

Dave ;)!

87 octane, as someone else already said, DEFINATELY burns hotter than 93 octane gasoline. 93 octane is also not a higher performance fuel than 87 octane, it burns slower than the 87 and is therefore more resistant to detonation. Situations of higher compression, inefficient cooling (hot spots from stagnant coolant in the heads/cylinders, not enough radiator/exchanger volume or surface area, etc) can all increase the likelihood of harmful detonation taking place, calling for the need for a higher octane fuel in order to safeguard the engine. This is the skinny of it. A guy could go much more in depth on the topic but this is enough to satisfy most. ;)!

;)! Thank you Swiss!! I had already done some of this :exc: earlier today and couldn't find anything. DOH!!! Forgot ALL about FAQ section. Lesson learned and HOPEFULLY, remembered.

Thanks I guess I learnt something new today about fuel.

87 octane.I knoe a guy that has ran partial e85 but that was high elevation which does not require as much octane.

if you were to run a blend of elthonol greater than 10% which is sold at alot of gas stations (usually 89 or 90 octane and will also run a little cooler, but may not get you max mpg) you may run into problems at a greater blend percentage.
Cars and trucks that can and are set up for E85 which is at the least 85% ethonol and 15% gas, have different injectors, teflon coated tanks and lines, octane compensator ( E85 ranges from 100-105 octane) etc. etc. this fuel is also termed DRY which means less lubricants and can harm a fuel system and in time the power plant itself if not set up for it.
So becarful if blending e 85% in anything unless it is a flex fuel system.
The higher the octane the better performance only depends on the mods, also a 4stroke motor reacts differently to higher octane than a 2 stroke.
