What to do to minimize/eliminate track howl?

Heres a quote from a thread on HCS

"I had the problem for 6000 miles. I had one of the outside rear wheel come off while riding. I drove 300 miles in peace and quiet. The end fix was to add a extra wheel like you would when you do a forth wheel kit. the trick is when you are done adding it. you then remove the outer two wheels and only run the inner wheels noise gone."

Looks like a lot of guys are putting in more/different wheel combinations with success, and a lot are using the AC quiet track.

The one out of your bro's sled? GREAT IDEA! LOL!

There very well could be an M20 in this sled in a year or two!
He leaves his garage open all the time. I'll bring my cordless impact gun ! We will have it out in 5 min. I even have a Ski Doo SC-3 skid in my garage. We will just stick that under neither! This could be fun!!!

Jim , I have over sized Ski Doo wheels on my sled . Because of my broken exhaust I couldn't notice any difference . Now that the machine is quite again maybe I can tell if they help and let you know

So it seems like there's no real consensus on what I could try?

Vibration absorbing matting seems to not work
"Quiet Track" has not helped on my 05 Vector
Skid wheels are already rubber
Smaller or larger dia. wheels in the skid? unknown results?
Single ply track - no opinions/experiences offered so far

I wonder is the frequency of the exhaust pipes in the tunnel matches or conflicts with the skid/track frequency when in the 40 MPH zone?

Yes I want it to get better but I don't have deep pockets to experiment with $500 single ply tracks...just like trying different skis.

Hopefully Mike Walters will be able to tell us more after this weekends riding.

Frustrating, but I will keep riding! ;)!

Thanks to all for their help so far!

The howling noise is the wheels going over the fiberglass rods in the track. Bigger wheels would likely make it louder. Maybe try the DuPont slides with smaller wheels? add some scratchers maybe. Adding those little wheels on the bend will make it louder, and if you drive hard at all they wont last long.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I'm already running the DuPont's and using Duraflex scratchers when needed. Maybe smaller diameter wheels will help? Not an expensive way to go that's for sure. I don't run studs and already run the track very lose.

So who offers smaller wheels than the stock Yamaha wheels?

Does anybody know if a Camoplast single ply track has the fiberglass reinforcing rods in them?

Ran the sled without the rearmost large idlers.....no change.

Going to be installing B-Quiet sound insulation on the tunnel top and sides. Hopefully tonight if all goes well.

Likely trying an Excell header only before next season. Our season in my county will be over after this weekend and have one more UP trip in March otherwise I might tackle the Excell header.

Will also be wrapping the exhaust headers as a group....not individually.

Also may look at a single ply track before next season.

Stay tuned if you are interested!

My wife has the 2010 Vector LTX. which we bought new.and it's much nosier then my Attak. Not as smooth as it either. So much so I wan to go to the SnoDeo to ride a Vector LTX to compare because I can't believe they are all like it. Except I do have the drone at a certain speed which I've gotten use to. She doesn't seem to have the drone. But her machine has more vibration and track noise or howl. She has a fully clipped track with extrovert drivers OEM from that year. And a slightly different suspension design. Same RipSaw track as mine.
It may be a combo of 3 cyl. which isn't as smooth as 4. The extrovert drivers and extra clips. But I can tell you my Attak is much smoother.

Pulled the seat off last night as well as the muffler cover. To do this right, I'll need to pull the skid out to gain complete access underneath, as well as pulling the tank to gain full access to the upper areas. This won't happen until the offseason.

I did install some B-Quiet Ultimate in the area under the seat that was exposed when I pulled it off. I also put a wrap of heat tape around both the LS and RS of the muffler. Also put tape around each of the exhaust tubes.

I'll be riding later today and the rest of the weekend. I doubt that what I did last night is going to make a difference. IMO...it's going to take a lot more work to get the improvement I am looking for. Maybe a singly ply track as well.

Just to make sure everybody is aware, this is something I have lived with for years on my 05 Vector and it's the same on my 14 Vector. I'm getting older and my hearing in my one good ear is getting worse. The drone is not a "sound" thing....it's a resonance. But I'm getting up in years and I guess I'm just more sensitive to the resonance now.

This issue WOULD NOT prevent me from buying a Yamaha 4S. My 14 is new this year (was a dealer demo). I just want to try to make it better for me and maybe lots of people with the same hearing problems. :4STroke::yam:;)!

I'm so busy with other stuff I can't even think about working on sleds right now! Honestly.....I don't want to! :o|

I once had a "howl" issue with one of my previous sleds and it was the way I had the track studded. I had lots of extra wheels in the skid and the studs ran the same place as the stud heads. Made one hell of a noise. I switched tracks and made sure to stud it different to clear the wheels and it was as quiet as a mouse. Just my 2 cents if you run studs, may be something to look at.

Howl is usually cause by the motor resonance and the wheels on the track resonance coming together at a certain speed. My old 1000 Pantera with a power breather at 25 to 30mph would vibrate your lungs so bad you could feel it never mind the deafening noise. You say you removed the back idler to test, only way to know is remove all the idlers. Larger wheels will only make the resonance worse. Secondly helmets are not all equal when it comes to resonance. My BVS2 is the quietest, My one Cat helmet is terrible for loudness and amplifies everything, the other is in-between but leans towards the BVS2. Quietest is no helmet at all. Amazingly quiet with no engine track or exhaust noise, wind however will freeze you ears off lickity split! Helmets work like resonance amplifiers some worse then others.

Sasquatch, that's a pretty good idea, remove all idler wheels (why are they called that?) and see if the noise goes away. If it does go away, well you know you have a wheely big problem then (couldn't resist that one!) Maybe try it with idlers removed, then idlers removed AND the 2 outer wheels at the rear axle. Well, you'll need snow obviously and it sounds like you want to solve this problem before you ride. I'm just not feeling that the tunnel foam will make a difference. But you never know until you try!
