Halfway through our ride yesterday I noticed a sort of buzzing exhaust sound and after a short WOT run the exhaust was buzzing badly under the seat towards the rear of the sled.
Looking underneath I can't see any obvious problems, but it sounds like the muffler itself has fallen apart with all the noise right at the rear. Also the exhaust sound itself seems much louder out the pipes. It basically sounds like the muffler itself has cracked and fallen apart, both internally and externally.
Do these mufflers tend to fall apart at high mileage?
Anyone heard of any seat fires started from a broken muffler? (thinking of just riding it as is...)

There was one report on here that I saw about a fire casued by an overheated muffler. It was thought that a plug was fowled and the gas was buring in the muffler???
However, the Heat Shields have been a typical problem.

It's not just heat shields rattling. This sled is now LOUD.
Yesterday the guys I was riding with also noticed it getting louder all day. By the end of the day my exhaust noise was loud enough the Apex riders could hear it over their sleds when I was near them (normally it's the other way around).
The sound is very similar to a 4 cylinder car with a rotted out muffler.
This is an 05 RX-1. Are there any heat shields that can come loose anyway?
Based on the response and a search earlier it doesn't look like a broken muffler is common...

When I started the sled up last night in the cold I looked underneath to see where the exhaust was leaking.
I could see lots of exhaust vapour coming out of the top of the crossover (X about mid track position).
Has anyone else seen this problem?
If it cracks all the way through what happens?
Does the exhaust drop onto the track and ruin the track?
These exhaust problems are getting annoying. This is the 4th exhaust leak that has needed fixing.

With 4 exhaust problems, I'd take it back to the dealer and ask about the problem. Just maybe they will replace it for you. By the way, if you want to get good quick help, it would have been good to mention, a bit earlier, the three previous exhaust problems.

I doubt my dealer would do a thing for me.
I probably should have mentioned it because it looks like it's actually the same problem again. The "donuts" between the muffler pipe and the 2-1 reduction pipe was where it was leaking before.
It looks like it's probably the same problem again only this time much worse.
These donuts were just changed under warranty back in November.

Just curious ,how many miles do you have on it ?
It sounds to me like it wasn't torqued properly .

05 does'nt have heat shields i'm pretty sure 03 was the only year that had them. Waste of material Yamaha decided they were more trouble than they were worth and not necessary.

Sasquatch, I would probably have to argue with my dealer for hours, write letters to Yamaha, and even then - at best - there's probably about a 10% chance they'd do anything for me. It's not worth the hassle to me.
They simply don't want to do any warranty work because they "make no money on it". I heard this over and over all last season.
BTW, the leak got very bad on yesterdays ride. By the end of the day my sled sounded like a old worn out Pinto with no exhaust.

Exhaust noise
I have an 03 with 2171 miles on it and all 4 flex tubes that come from the motor to the exhaust pipe are broken. REAL loud and extra stinky as the exhaust comes up under the hood. If it is an 03 the part has been updated 2 times so I am thinking there is a problem with these.
