sound
Guys we maybe missing the point here, sound is what will end our riding areas, the lame attempts by the tree-huggers will only carry more weight with the non-tree-huggers if we don't give them the respect that they demand to allow us on the trails through private property and into and out of towns. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the sweet sounds of a performance exhaust, but the land owner could give a $&*% what the noise is that is coming from your sled, all he knows is its racket that he doesn't want to hear. All my machines from my Apex, Phazer, Honda Rincon, Polaris RZR have the factory exhaust that meet the sound standards, plus on the Rincon and the RZR I added on an Hushpower silencer to them to become even STEALTHIER in the woods. Wanted to get a new dirt bike either the YZF450 or the CRF450 but they are so loud stock that I gave up on that idea of getting one. Stealth is the only way we can keep our trails open

I gutted my stock muffler. I have buddies with apexes and one has an excel and one had a hauck and another has this Ultra-Q. We were at a tubing party and compared them all going up the hill next to each other. My gutted was the quietest while idling next to the rest. At 40MPH I think they were all about the same except the hauck (quiet version) was noticibly louder. At WOT up the hill mine and the excel were comparible with the Ultra Q next then the Hauck shattering ear drums. They all have a little different tone to them so that is preference/difference except that mine only cost me an hour of my own time and theirs were all expensive. I would recommend gutting your stock muffler to anyone looking to change the tone of your apex. As for power goes. They were all pretty close with traction making the only difference in speed/acceleration (except the hauck sled but I think he had his clutching messed up, his sled has run good since changing the helix).

has anybody done any research regarding horsepower loss or gain with a gutted stock muffler ??? is there any pieces in there that are keepers or do you literally gut it out ?
