As I understand it, the '04 rings were different from the '03. I know that the "new rings" in the '04 were originally listed as one of the 117 changes from '03 to '04. But, for some reason the part numbers in the books did not catch up until '05. I can't explain that. But I believe that this is what has caused guys to think that the '04 rings are the same as '03's.
Regardless of which part number you have, .... if compression is fine, then run them. If compression is bad, use the '05 or later part number to order rings. That way, you know you are getting the updated parts. Excessive oil consumption is one of the indicators that it is time to check compression or at the very least, examine the piston tops for carbon.
