Yamalube 4-S for me. Personally, I see no reason to try to out-think Yamaha on their oil recommendation for their sleds.

Yamaha is in this business to make money. If you truly understand "oil" then you would understand the concept of an OEM being able to make more money by selling a semi-synthetic as opposed to a full PAO synthetic. That is why they sell what they sell. Their oil is adequate. But if you can buy a higher performing oil for the same price or in some cases less, then why not? If you're satisfied with the "OEM" oil then by all means stick with it. It'll certainly get you down the trail.BigMac said:Yamalube 4-S for me. Heh heh...this from yet another adherent to the cult of Amsoil - Master Marketers.Yamzilla said:Yamaha is in this business to make money. If you truly understood oil and the difference between group II base stocks and PAO-based lubricants, you'd grasp the concept that synthetic oil is primarily a marketing tool.
OTOH, it will get you down the trail, won't hurt your engine, and it's your money to waste. If using synthetic oil makes you feel better, go for it.

To answer your question like some have, I switched to Mobil 1 0w-30 at 1300 miles, but with that being said, the 4S is pretty good stuff too. I thing for our application, full syn is overkill. The package in the 4S is plenty protection. But for applications like my Harley (air cooled, summer driving) full syn is far superior IMO.

There is a reason that Yamaha specs semi-synthetic and not full synthetic. Relates to starter failure. The starter one-way bearing is in the oil and needs a little friction to work. Ask your dealer or perhaps someone from Yamaha would like to step in on this one. The oil rating is still 0W-30 so from a cold start perspective it is all good.
(Same reason for not using friction modifiers -- quads too as the sprag clutch is internal too)

ANYONE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEIR STARTER????
Are you guys saying switching after the 500 mi break in is a problem. I like Amsoil 0w40 for the cold start improvements when you are in sub zero temperatures like you can get in northern Ontario and northern Quebec.
I just ordered 2 cases, I have to change oil in 5 Yami 4strokes. 3 of these are just completing break in.

I have yet to hear one person who has had a problem switching...I feel waiting til 750-1000 miles is a better idea though...
