When did yamaha start efi sleds

If I am not mistaken, the 2006' Apex was the first Yamaha EFI sled.

I wonder what took so long? I believe Cat and Polaris had them in the early '90s. I was surprised when my '05 RX didn't have EFI...

Wonder how reliable they have gotten, any issues with yours EFI guys? My buddy had a EFI cat and it had problems, it seen a tow rope many times with EFI/fuel delivery concerns. At least with a carbed model you dont have to worry about delivery pump going bad.....one mechincal pump may go but not both.

Cat's batteryless EFI system was rock solid, and that started around '99 or so. Simple, easy to work on, very few parts. The only drawback was that it was also tough to tune. The ECU didn't allow any tuning, and the only real way to change fueling was to adjust the fuel pressure delivered to the injectors.

Cat was maybe 1995. I had a 97 zr and put close to 5000 miles on with no issues.

Early polaris 500 had problems and so too rxls , yamaha took more time but i will tell you 05 rx1 with carbs was faster and got better fuel range than 06 efi apex.

Had 2 Cat EFI sleds and they were both rock solid systems. Very reliable, easy to start and run.

The only drawback to those was that they required a GOOD battery, and could get a little picky about voltage. Even slightly low could cause it to become a little finicky. (not really even a true drawback, as yamaha also obviously requires a battery!) The system itself was great though.

Cat's batteryless EFI actually started as a late season release of the ZR580 sno pro, which became the 97 ZR580, great performer.

But are the systems of the Polaris mid 90's EFI, Cat batteryless and the current Yamaha all the same? I thought that the only "true" closed loop (?) EFI system was on the Cats? I had a 92 EFI 500 Polaris that I out almost 4000 miles on in one year and had zero issues with it. It took be from Wisconsin to Canada and back in January 1992. Great sled!

I've owned an 03,and 05 RX1. Still have the 03 and now have an 06 Apex. Apex is a faster sled right out of the box fuel range may be slightly better on the 05 but I don't keep exact numbers. All I know is I consistantly take way less fuel then 2 strokes and the only thing to beat my Apex on hard pack snow is other Apex's. My buddy's first sled was a Polaris 650 RXL, his actually had no problems at all until his stator went out. Ran like a bat out of hell for what it was. I have read that most RXL's had issues with the EFI though.

Our 94 Indy 500 efi has been totally reliable. The only issue it has ever had has been a wire that wore through a little but that short was easily fixed. Other than that, that system needs a good battery, but that isn't an issue.

Yamaha did have smart carbs, on some 600 cc twins like the mtn max and the venture. That system compensated for temp and elevation. Out venture has been solid too, over 8k on that sled, no issues with the smart carbs.
