When do people change their filters? I have heard people do it every year and some do it by mileage (2000 miles or so). My filter has about 400 miles on and its going on its second season. Would you change it? I still change the oil once a year I just want to know what people do about the filter.

After the initial break in oil change , I have been changing it every 6000 miles but the book says you can wait until 12,000. I do change oil every year regardless of miles put on !

Ok thanks guys! I don't put many miles on every year so I fell like I don't need to change the filter every year. I'm lucky if I get 500 miles a year. I always change the oil every year though.

I realize it's probably overkill especially since I run the full synthetic 0W-40 Yamalube and Napa Gold Filter (#1365) but I change oil and filter every year. The only time I did not was this year when the Nytro only had approximately 150 miles put on it from last season where it typically gets between 1000-2000 miles. With only putting on 500 miles and it's not the initial break-in 500 miles, I would probably not change the filter either.

Yeah its pretty sad the I only get that much. I used to get 1-2K a year when we actually had winters around my house. I think I'll go one more year and change it next season.I realize it's probably overkill especially since I run the full synthetic 0W-40 Yamalube and Napa Gold Filter (#1365) but I change oil and filter every year. I'm in the overkill boat and have changed my oil and filter every year regardless of mileage. My first couple years I put on nearly 2,000 miles on each winter, but the last 2 combined I think were under 400 miles total. Seems like a bit of a waste but I know everything is good that way. I run 0W-40 Amsoil and a Wix filter. I buy the oil on sale at a local Fleet Farm when I see it and then stock up on filters for all my stuff when the local auto parts store has their spring filter blowout sale.

Since you run Amsoil I should tell you this... You can go on Amsoil's website and become a preferred member and then you can buy all there products at whole sale. It's only $20 a year. Not many people know about that. Amsoil rep was telling me at Haydays. You save about 25% on everything they sell. Also shipping is fast! I had 8qts of oil in 2 days.I'm in the overkill boat and have changed my oil and filter every year regardless of mileage. I have been changing my oil filters every other year. Even with that I am lucky to put 1,600 - 1,800 miles on the sled over that time. G.B.

Change oil and filter every year its cheap insurance!!! There is always the potential for moisture getting in when sitting for 8 months. No matter mileage I change them.

Same here... every year. Moisture is the enemy, not mileage.

Thanks for all the post! Its nice to see honest opinion's and what everyone does. I'll most likely change it this year since it really doesn't take anymore time to do an oil/filter change.

I'll have to run the numbers and see if it pays off. I'm consistent with WIX filters across the board on everything I own, but run different oils depending on application. Usually run Amsoil in my Nytro but did run Mystik one year as My local store was out of Amsoil. My car and truck I run Mobil 5000, they have great rebates locally all the time so I get a 5 quart jug for $7. In my wheeler I run Shell Rotella T6, again able to find great sales locally.
