Well almost time to ride so time for the oil change, What are people doing as far as filter changes go? I changed oil and filter at the begining of last year and drove about 1500 miles "maybe" not more for sure, do most guys follow the manual and change the filter every 12000 miles (that just sounds crazy to me) or change it yearly with the oil change or every 2 years???

I changed mine every year including this year, but thats the last time for a couple of years I have nitrous and its a pita. My oil looked like new after 2800 miles so I'm sure the filter will be fine for 5200 miles roughly. Just my opinion though you do what feels right for you.

They say that u should change it every year because of the contaminants that build up in the oil, acids excetera will break down the additives in the oil and hard on the bearings. Supposedly that is why u should change the oil at the end of the season, clean fresh oil in the engine.

I put on less than 1000 miles last season. I am leaving the oil for another season. The filter for a couple more.

Ya changing the oil for sure just wondering about the filter.
I guess for the cost and little time it takes I probably should just change it.

I do oil and filter every season. Really, the filter isn't that much extra work. Probably takes 15 min tops to take off the headlight/gauge pod, airbox, and battery/bracket. Another 15 to remove the filter and clean up the mess. Then another 30 min to reassemble if you take your time. The way I look at it you're talking an extra hour to do the filter at a cost of $10-$15 which is pretty cheap insurance. I use a M1-108 Mobil 1 filter and Amsoil synthetic so you don't even need to go to the dealer to get supplies. To each his own but clean oil is pretty critical for an engine that spends half its life cranking 7000 rpm or more.

That's good to know - where the heck is it? I just had my wife's tank off because it sprung a little leak and I had to repair. Wish I had know to look for this.

It's on the oil line at the bottom of the tank, take the two Allen key bolts out and slide down

Does it need a gasket or is it sealed with an O ring?

When I went to check mine, I didn't remove the oil line and ended up bending the screen and breaking the spot weld on one side

In the future, I will always remove the oil line first which will allow the screen to come straight down and out.
