Working in the shop today and bumped the sled walking past it and thought nothing of it. About 10 seconds later there was smoke coming out of the hood and from the handlebars. What happend was I had left the heated visor cord plugged into the sled by accident and the male end that plugs into the helmet must have made contact with the tunnel and shorted the end out and started the cord on fire. Luckily I was standing right there and ripped it off the sled. The visor plug was wired in when I bought the sled and I never thought of checking to see if it had a fuse, but in this case it was wired directly to the battery. So never leave the male connector on the cord and check for a fuse in your visor cord.

And the importance of a fuse. Good thing you caught it in time.

Good thing you caught it in time! Could have been alot worse than a burnt wire. Lesson learned, I'm sure.
You sir, should be the PSA spokesman for all the TY users asking if they should use an inline fuse on their heated shield chord (or any other electrical component they're adding on)....hahaha.

I don't think I should be a spokesman, I was dumb enough to leave the male connector attached. Losing The sled was the least of my concerns, shop had my skidsteer, 2 tractors, combine and a semi in it. As far as the fuse, I can't believe they don't have one in it. I had installed a fuse on my old sled, but it just ran off the stator and not battery power. It's amazing it didn't burn up, because the insulation of the cord burnt off completely right to the battery posts and it has melted grooves in any plastic that it was touching.

Hope you know the "spokesman" thing was a joke..LOL. Just said because so many TY users ask if they should put a fuse inline with their heated shield. I cant fathom why one would not use a fuse. $2 fuse and fuse holder could possibly save a lot of $$ in damage..in your case..sled, skidsteer, 2 tractors, a combine, and a semi. Your insurance agent would not like to have received that call. haha
I have a few accessories (heated shield, GPS, Air Horns, alarm/remote start) all fused. I installed all the waterproof fuse holders/fuses to left of the airbox, so they are very accessible in the event I have to change.

I eventually tapped into the brake light switch connector, which is fused

When I bought my sled it had a heated visor plug that the previous owner installed.... It was zip tied to the fuel lines and wasn't fused. Needless to say I disconnected it from the battery since I don't have a heated shield.
I bought a sled for my son and it has the heated visor cable. I will check tonight and see if the hot wire has a inline fuse. Good info.
What size fuse are you guys putting on the wire?

2 amp and as close to the battery as you can get it.

Which is another bad idea... IMO
That 10 amp circuit feed both rear position + brake filaments. Should you (you will) short circuit by any reason and security is compromised.

Just installed a Kimpex part #001983 heated shield wire on my XTX. It comes with a 5 AMP inline fuse and several male/female RCA style connectors. Looks to be a pretty nice product.

NY AttakGT (Steve) did you install a new fuse block or did you just bundle all those fuse holders together?

No, just the fuse holders. These are similar to the ones I used. They are right next to the jump start/charging cables behind and to the right of the oil reservoir. I have a bunch of them if you need any.
