We're heading to Maine this February for a week of riding, partying and having fun. Emphasis on riding.. Any pointers on what part of Maine to go to? Northern Maine? Any must ride trails? Places to see? Links with some good info on the area? Trail Maps? Any info would be of interest. Thanks..

Ride up in the county. Trails are unreal and are like riding hot top. A good run is the loop up to escrow which is the farthest point north in maine. Great trail to ride. Be cautious on the fuel as the gas station at the canadian border is only open during the week and the run up to escrow and back is a 95 mile loop. But its got some great pits along the way to boondock in and some great scenary

island falls, patten, morill over into houlton, down into hayensville. over to east grand, million dollar view, peakaboo mountain. Linneus snow sport trails are great most anytime, a great day ride is up the east side, rail bed to mars hill, then to easton, up the boarder trail, over the top to saint agat, back down around through washburn over to mapleton, then ashland and back down to houlton, about a 300 miler so you better not leave after supper, though we have before.

Awesome! Now we're talking. I'm marking my map. Its just a print screen of the sled gps map but I'll find a better one.
So is Island Falls or Houlton a good place to stay? Is that far enough north? Presque Isle be better? I dig boondocking.

z28rx1 is planning a trip to maine at that time.
The best area for all around sledding and not driving extra is island falls oakfield, houlton area.

lots of people will drive 3hrs past great sledding to the top of maine, just so they can spend some of the week driving back down.

Kahtahdin lodge Is a friend of mine, it is in moril maine, trail groomed to the lodge. I would recomend a day or so of riding southeast a loop into lineus for grammies country in and a trip down the game preserve trail and into haynesville to pitlock. This is very well maintianed and very untraveled.
Do a day southwest tward the mountain and along the river, great views, most everything is wood roads and lakes. From there you will want to do an overnighter up north, things you will want to see are the boarder trail up vanburen,

Sounds like great advice. We backpacked across Michigans Upper P. last year. A few loops out of a home base and a night or two out of a backpack sounds perfect. Thanks! I'll see what the four people I'm going up with are hearing. I'd bet its something similar. I'll throw you a PM if I have any more questions if you don't mind. Is that lonesome loop through Baxter State Park worth the trek. Any good views going through there? It doesn't appear it goes up the mountian or anything.

I was sledding in Linneus last year with a buddy from Houlton and another from Bangor. Great trails...some deep powder and a Dr McGillicuttys one night too i think...... :drink:

Made a few stops at Bill and Bettys too.....good times. Will be heading back this winter too if summer ever leaves....lol

Beth, thanks for the information. I have a group going the first full week of February and have a post started in the Ride section. I will add your information there as well. Check out that post so we call all be informed. We are looking for some different off the beaten path sites as well.

The trains on chamberalin lake. I have not been there yet but have heard it is a good ride and kind of weird to see.

about that time, there is something going on in about every other town so as time gets near, this might be something to watch for . I know there are some dog sled races we got stuck in once I wish I had checked before I left.

The trains are cool. Its a goat path to them, but getting more and more traveled each year. They actually groomed part of it last year. The forks area is also a great area with tons of places stay. Rangely is usually packed.

Matters what your looking for.

maine is filled with old logging towns, mills, and train yards. This one happened to be left with old style trains and some other stuff. It would seem that they were set there by aliens as in the winter, you can see nothing else around other than trees.
just do a search for abandon trains in northern maine. The state has a park web site for it I think.

Any suggestions for Rangeley area and points north...Eustis..Jackman, and the western portion of the state?
