I've got a friend that is interested in an Apex XTX. The question is- what year? I'm hoping some owners would chime in with the pros and cons of the CK vs. Single Shot, etc. Do the tipped rails on the CK work? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

11s are good but they did some updating on the 12s and that’s why I got a 12 last year. The guy had a 12 and a 15 and the only difference was color and price . The single shot I hear wasn’t good and you can buy a replacement but it was expensive . Have fun shopping!

O ya get a good set of skis and the tipped rails work well . I bought the 09 apex mountain skis and it handles awesome compared to stock .

well i own both and have a seasons worth of running on the 2016 apex xtx. the 2011-15 apex xtx does corner better than the 16-18 does. still tuning the singleshot but the 16-17 xtx does need the upgraded one as the stock shock cannot keep up with the bumps in my experiance. mine was covered under warentee. it took me 2-3 seasons to get the 2011 set how i want it so i have to let the 16 have that chance.

any of the ones with tuner skis pretty much need the skis replace for most riders. i run the 09 mtx ski on both of mine and love them for what i do.

the 12-15 skid is different from the 11 in idler wheel placement as i have a 12 skid into the 11 atm.

some guys will tell him to use a star kit for the best ride in the 11-15 sleds but mine runs fine with some shock valving and the lighter nitro xtx springs.

the 2011 has 17000 mi on it and when the gf rode it the 1st time, i was basically told to go buy myself another sled. she still does not like the 16 but it has improved.

I have the xtx single shock. I got it with the upgraded shock but didn't ride it that long. It rode fine for my style as did the Tuners. I did buy the Hygear Rear coil over shock due to the weight I am and the stuff I carry. The upgraded shock at full pressure allowed to much sag dry. I mean no ice or snow packed onto it. And I now don't worry about busting the shock someday.
I don't know why others say the tuners are bad or the single shot is bad but haven't rode Apex's for over 30,000 miles this 2016 XTX OEM except Hygear coil over is a great machine. No complaints.

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't know about the '12 skid changes. Were there any notable changes between the single shot years? Please keep the info and opinions flowing!

I don't think you can go wrong on anything 2011 or newer if the sled is in good shape and well maintained. The suspension you can tweak to your liking. My brother has owned a 2011, 2012 and 2016.

Where have you guys come across the 2009 MTX Apex ski?
I have the mountain skis with snowtrackers on my 2011 XTX also. I like them.

They are easy to find. Brand new on Partzilla $90 bucks each. Ski 8FK-23711-00-BK
You do need the longer spindle bolt and spacer/collar. Bolt 90105-10410-00
Spacer/Collar 90387-10036-00

The 16 and newer singleshot suspension make sure it has the upgraded shock, hand warmers work excellent, hifax dont have wear issues like the earlier models. Yamaha was still refining these sleds right to the last year made.

I found a 13 upgraded to star, cant compare as i did that before the season. I got a white, red, black one then up graded to the anniversary wind shield and looks like the 15 anniversary model, unless you look close at A arms mine are wrong color -silver instead of the red.
The motor is throttle response defined and sweet high rev sound out back.
Fabulous trail sled.

No difference in years. The only difference is if you have a 129 or 146 xtx. They are close but still different.

Get the Apex that fit's your budget and has the lowest mileage with no mod's of course. And like he said 11 and up would be best.

catcaper, we are talking apex/vector xtx.

greatwhite, pretty much any of the mtx ski's from the phazer, nitro and apex goes on there with the right spindle hardware. you can use washers with a longer bolt but brother broke every one we did that way, so now we use all the 09 apex mtx spindle hardware on all our rx, rs, sx, and apex sleds. phazer is only sled without them yet but the curve xs skis are not doing too bad on it.

lots of the mtx skis i bought on here when they pop up but i have gotten a set or 2 from ebay.

I have a 14 XTX with the tipped rails and I really like it, especially after putting the Star kit in it last year. Star is gonna rebuild my ski shocks soon to complete the package. This kit is a massive improvement and worth every penny. I would also recommend 6in wide C&A skis as the stockers suck. I've had 0 issues in 9500 miles!
