(I posted this same message on Totallyamaha site, and they asked me to post it here, too)

I currently have a 2002 SXr 700, and I am considering stepping into a 2003 or 2004 RX-1.

I "think" I want to try out the 4-stroke, but will I be happy??

I don't do any ice racing, mostly ride on groomed trails, and some state parks in my area. I ride the SXr pretty agressive (I road race motorcycles in the summer), so I like leaning/sliding the sled through the turns at high rates of speed.

Some things I don't like about the 2-stroke are the noise (but I wear ear-plugs, so no big deal) and the smell (even though I REALLY love the smell in the beginning of the snow season) after a few rides everything smells like carbonized Yamalube.

Any advice from others that have made the same swap would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
MJB

First of all, what year RX are you looking at? It'll be interesting how people rate the mono, but it's supposed to be nice.

As for riding groomed trails, I could not be any happier. I did "136" my track which helped hookup and absorbing big bumps, but as for handling goes, it's a dream in my book and wouldn't go back.

I think for the most part, most people are very pleased with this machine.

What do you mean by getting them "right". Suspension? Clutch?

I just like to ride them...I wouldn't know what a good clutch setup compared to a poor setup would feel like. I just press the gas and steer.

Best sled i ever owned, and also the most fun! I just ridem too! I have done all the updates they are talkin about, and it still don't feel any different than day one! The only think to make a huge diff was to change the rear shock, to a revavled viper shock. It doesn;t slam you in the rear anymore. I have a 03 shorty, and would bye it again. The clean smell when you get back home is really nice too! Of course ya gotta ride up front, which this sled loves to do HONK :4STroke:

Kinda heavy tp throw around but I believe that is their only shortfall. I'll second the vote for a Warrior ;)!

I have an 04 Warrior came off an SRX.It was a big change as far as handling went took quite a while to get used to how it would react in a corner compared to my SRX I also had 8,000 hard miles on my SRX so I knew what to expect when I blasted in to a corner. After putting 3,000 miles on the Warrior last winter I would not go back to a 2-stroke ever a again love the 4 stroke. Most people who say they would not own a 4stroke simply have not rode one yet or long enough to learn to love them like we all do.Get one and enjoy. :4STroke:

The mods are some front end adjusments and replacements. The first few rides I was ready to trade it in. Now with the mods of links, sways, simmons, and ohlins on the front and the m10 rear susp. I wouldnt give it up for anything. It does take a little getting used to. I would do the following as a must;

links and sway
simmons skis w/bergstrom skegs
shocks front and rear (u wont be sorry)
and a ripsaw

with these simple mods, you will be very, very pleased. Do a search, there a few more things for adjustments and darting. The LB set up and the darting trick, and take all preload off of front shocks.

Where can I get these things from? I haven't found a good snowmobile retail website. Most of the sites I have been on don't seem to have a good online store.

(So far Maximum Perf is pretty good.)

Thanks,
MJB

P.S> What's the difference between the RX1 and a Warrior??

My personal opinion,, having owned a viper and rode a sxr 600 and srx...

You will never get the 4 stroke to handle as well and as stable as the old yamis! But you can get it close!!

The only sled i would suggest to you is the vector!! It will be as light as the sleds you have ridin and should handle better than the rx or warrior!

The vector should be very close to the handling of the sxr700 and might even have MORE power!!

All the new mags say that the vector feels as fast as the rx-1!

TurboMike, you can pick up the longer links and thicker sway bar at any Yamaha dealer. You don't have to switch the shocks, but you would need to change the springs from linear rate to straight rate. This only applies to the 03 RX-1. Maxximum Performance has all this stuff on their web site.

The 04 RX-1 and Warrior have the 1.25" Ripsaw track while the 03 RX-1 has a 1" track. The 04 models also have the handwarmer fix so that it remembers your last setting after the engine is switched off.

IMO, the most important difference between RX-1 and the Warrior is that the Warrior has 7+ inches more of contact with the snow, which gives better traction.

Personally i wouldnt even consider buying a 03' rx-1..

Unless you are willing to drop a ton of cash into it to make it as good as the 04's! (maybe if you stole one for $4000)

Cost wise you can pick up a 04' for dollors over what a 03 sells for!

I paid $7800 for my warrior NEW! and i know there was some place in minnisota selling them for $7400! Im sure you can still find them for that or even less!

YOu would pay $6000-6500 for a used 03' just to have to update the shocks, links, swaybar and seat and still only have a 03'
