What ever you do this is not a lazy mans sled. FYI I'm completely confident in my 12 year old son piloting mine, he does have dirt bike and quad experience though. They are a blast for trail riding, but a whole different animal than a "conventional" (read firecat, apex, pro x) sled.
I wouldn't let my 11.5 yr old ride our phazer (yet). He has plenty of dirt bike and quad experience too. I think the excessive engine braking would be the first thing to get newbie riders in trouble. The second would be lack of knowledge on how much body positioning effects the handling. We have several Z chassis AC's and none of the casual riders want to be on the Phazer after trying both. It takes a while before you can be confident on the Phazer. It's a great bump sled, handling the rough stuff as good/better than enything I've ridden. Great midrange power. Reliable so far. Newbie friendly, not so much.

the family and friends that would be riding with me have no riding experience at all snowmobiling and or dirt bikes. they are older prob from teh ages of 22 and up but don't have any experience and I'm looking for a good reliable sled that if I buy new that I may end up riding all the time and then use my older nytro as the guest sled or I could look for a used sled with low miles for a guest sled. I would like to stick with Yamaha because I'm more familiar with working on them plus the engine reliability is a better long term investment. I guess I'll wait and see what the new sled lineup is and then figure out what I'll do. Maybe try and find a left over '2010 vecter.

I went from a AC ZL 800esr to the phazer and i DO NOT miss the 151hp it had at all. The phazer is much more fun to ride on. People give me a hard time cause i ride a 500cc sled now but its just so darn fun.
Give it a try before making a decision, try to ride it for more than 20 mins, get to know the sled.

My schmidt bros clutch kit reduces engine braking some.( as does ulmers from what I've read on here) It's too bad we all aren't closer so we could get together and ride each others sleds with the different mods we've all done. I know after people tried the schmidt bros sway bar they would be sold on it. It's that noticeable in stability, and handling. Anyway I respect your choice with your son, without mods it is a tough sled for newbies. That being said, I'm looking to put another phazer in the garage for next year(to be modded of course), they are so much fun to ride. Enjoy your winter, riding with our kids is what it's all about.jfremder said:snomaniac said:I agree with most of the statements above, but will say that adding the schmidt bros sway bar makes a huge difference in cornering and side hilling. like it was said earlier you have to ride a phazer to know if its the sled for you.
