I've been concidering a trip out west to do some riding. I don't want to be limited to just trail riding when I go. I really enjoy going off trail. I have an 06 Attak that I've added a 136" Expert X skid and set it back 3.5" to run a 144" track with a 151 tunnel ext. I can extend it to 151" and put on a 1.75" track. will this be enough or should I be going longer?
I figure I can get an used track and the rail ext for less then $600. Much cheaper then buying a mountain sled. I can swap tracks and rails in just a few hours.

Sure it will work. Back in 1996, a 136 1.5" to 2" was considered a mountain
track. Then it has gone all the way to 174 with a 3" padel. I gave up with a 162 by 2.5". Not sure the ski stance on an Attack compared to an Apex Mt, but it wont be that big of a deal. The 151 track will work just fine for the amount trips that you will be making out west. Like you said, no point buying another sled. Image to make use of the power the engine makes, should be clutch it, maybe regear it. Somebody like Ulmer or Hartman would have a good clutch setup. Most of all, have fun out west. By the way, I like the looks of your sled.

If you set your skid back put, get a anti-stab kit. I didn't and I ruined a $600 track 15 miles out. Go with a 2" track and you will be much happier. The expert x does good in the deep snow.

Yeah a 144 can be fun in the deep snow. if it were mine id rather buy what ever length track YOU like best and get a 2 1/4 or 2.5 inch lug. IF staying with a small lug track then yah go longer.

Gear down but dont buy an expensive clutch kit. Use Yami's high altitude settings.

I was thinking that 1.75" was the tallest lug That would fit without pulling the tunnel protecters. If a 2" will work I'd go with it. The ski stance is wider then the MTX sleds. The narrow stance, is it for flotation ar side hilling? Either way something I'll just have to deal with.

Anti-stab kit is a MUST with that set-back. I would ride it the way it is for your first trip. You will still have a ton of fun. Eric
Reason I sugguested a clutch kit, is yamaha never made a mountain apex with a 151. As this was the track length he was asking about. Clutching it like an apex mt isnt going to be right as thats a 162 track with 8t 3"drivers. Sure they made a RX1 mountain, no idea if that would work on an Apex. Maybe somebody on here will see this & has setup a short track apex with a 151. Not sure what clearance you have, but a 2.5 is going to require 7t drivers. Which adds more the cost of the change over. Forsure a regear will make it work alot better & make the belt alot happier. The narrow ski stance is suppose to help, local dealer that I ride alot with turned a short track in a 162 turbo sled yrs ago. So it had the wide a-arms on it, we never noticed it compared to mine. Same turbo kits, track lengths, etc.

Time is on my side here. I can just wait for the parts to show up at a good price. I ordered an anti-stab wheel kit last night from CEComponents. You guys kinda freaked me out. When I put the skid in it was suggested by viperdave but he's run his for a couple seasons without trouble. Any how it's on it's way now. I'll try and stay below $1000. I figure i would spend that in rental over a couple trips.

The weights are the same on the attack from low to high. You just need to take the rivits out for the mountains. I will talk to a friend and see what spring he used.

I'll be looking to go next November through Mom's Motorsports or Trips Out West. Both will transport me and my sled. lodging Includes breakfast and dinner. After the first trip or so ill probably venture out on my own.
The lodging they offer is shared rooms and common area. Not really my idea of the best acommadations. I don't drink so listening to a bunch of yahoos isn't the best for me. Got some time to figure it though.

I dont think I would plan a trip like that in November. Just look at this year, ride out west ANYWHERE right now is marginal at best and wasnt even ridable until the first week in december.
Just a FYI. Eric
