wont start when motor is warm

i just put a ecp kit on and after i warm it up and ride for a lil while my sled wont start unless i give it some throttle then she starts. it never did this b 4 the ecp kit. whats going on

I have a 03. Same problem. I believe it's related to the carb heaters. You can install a valve to turn off the heater. I've been just living with it.

I have an 03 with filters and after the carbs were sinct. and shut of valve for carb heat was installed all issues disappeared, runs great and starts great hot or cold.

You're correct about the carbs heaters integrated into the engine cooling system causing this. I want point out it's not the electrical circuit that comes on during cold starts causing this though for those not aware of the dual heating methods. The electrical heaters shut of once the light on the dash goes out and the warm coolant keeps the carbs thawed after that. The hot coolant however causes the fuel in the carb bowls to evaporates causing a slight vapor lock in the fuel system when you stop for breaks.

To fix this you need to install a shutoff valve in the small (1/8" I do believe) hose that attaches to the metal coolant line running across the top of the valve covers and runs to the top front of the carb on the #4 cylinder (clutch side of engine). I used a 1/4" brass ball valve designed to handle 170 PSI @ temps well above the normal operating temps with brass 1/4" female npt threads, the proper sized brass hose barbs converting to 1/4" male npt threads to screw into the brass valve and properly sized hose clamps ensuring there would be no failure. I bought this stuff from the plumbing section of my local hardware store. To make sure I had the correct size barbs for the small coolant hose; I took it with me.

Since adding this valve I have never had problems starting the sled when warm. One thing to note; if any of you guys choose to install a shutoff valve in this coolant carb heater line, make sure you leave it open just enough to let the warm coolant trickle through. If you don't do this; the intake side of the carbs will frost up and the sled will act like it isn't firing on all cylinders.

do you leave it like 1/4 the way open all the time or do you ever open it up all the way? why didnt i have a problem without the filters? does any one have pics of the shut off valve?

I have always had to press the throttle a bit to get it to start good when it is hot. One has to get off the throttle quick when she fires up in the gas line though. I would bet that it is the carb heater, too. But the work-around I use works for me.

Have your carbs synced, and get your idle up to 1,500 and you will be a lot happier. And if you are real mechanically inclined, take the carbs off, and make sure the air mixture screws are at 2 1/4 turns out before the carb sync is done.
