My sled is an 04 and it uses next to nothing for oil. I broke it in like I was going ride it right off the hop. Did not baby it at all.

Don't hink you guys are the only ones....I have an 05 RX1 that uses about a Qt every 900 miles.
Funny thing is that it just started doing it at the end of last season. I have about 8000 miles on mine. Not sure what I'll do. I was thinking of trying the RingFree thing but who has time for that.....?

My light comes on at about the 175 mile mark. Yamaha says it is supost do that. BS now we are out of warrenty and have to fix it ourself. Yamaha should pay for the 05 rings on EVERY 03 and 04 seld. We bought the "best sled" on the market at the time and it is crap that I have to add an additive to "help" not "fix" the problem. YAMAHA PLEASE FIX THIS AT NO COST TO ME
I agree whole heartedly, no bulletins, no warning, I was told by a friend w/an rx1 that if you comlained to your dealer about the oil useage and it was still under factory warranty that Yamaha had ok'd them to fix it. What kind of BS is that...... You have to complain to get manufactuer defect fixed. Really kinda soured me on Big blue will be looking elsewhere for my next sled. My brand loyalty is now gone!

You got me thinking!!!
I just ran outside and checked my oil. Looked good no oil usage or at least from my automotive days, nothing to fuss over, it looks to be as full as I set it a few months ago. I'll be wary of this though. I'm sure i'll need to check it more as I actually get some miles on the sled(only about 1700 miles now). I know these are based on R-1 bike and YZF off road engines and I believe many of you, as I want to think they are bullet proof, But the fact is 1st year anything is never totally bullet proof. And I hate to sound like the realist, but the 4 stroke sled engines get worked way harder than A hard days ride on there two wheeled cousins even in the summers hottest weather, just easier to rip down a smooth paved road than rippen threw the trails, especially when you need mother natures help (in the way of snow to help you cool every thing down).. In my Opinion way more variables in the cold and snow.

Yeah these motors are spinning 10 grand all day long. Those of you who bought the 03's you have to figure like anything thats first year...expect some things to happen.
Look at what the guys who bought the Machs went thru. So bad they don't even make that motor any more. That thing was going to put Ski Doo out of business if they kept making it. (probably not...but you know what I mean)

If your sled is running good and it is using lots of oil just buy cheap oil and have some fun with it. It is what it is so you might as well get some use and fun out of it.

I understand that the first years will have problems, but it should be fixed UNDER warrenty if there is a problem. I did complain to my dealer and other dealers and they said that it is normal to burn oil. That is PR BS SPIN.
Just a thought, Do you thing that the sleds are jetted wrong causing carbon build up?
Has anyone lowered the main jets?

If the problem occured within the warranty period and your dealer actually complained to yamaha the problem would have been fixed...there are several guys here that got new rings under warranty. It's a bit late now to complain...the sleds are 4 and 5 years old.

I agree with most of the above statements (first year bugs and about spiinning crazy rpms all day) My problem is with the way yamaha handled the prob. With SO many 03s having the same issue, there SHOULD have been a recall, or some type of notice given to owners to keep an eye on it. Dont get me wrong I really do like the sled and have road yammi every year but 2 of the close to 20 that Ive been riding that is why I am so dissapointed in the way that they handled it.

I talked to many dealers when it first happened year 2 and I had a 3 year warrenty, I can not prove it, it was a verbal conversation, and they did not offer me anything but the BS spin. I do love my sled and I would not give it up, but I can not keep putting oil in it every ride.
That's about right!! All 03 take oil. My mountain did about the same amount of oil burning you describe, but never got any worse. Had it reringed at 24,000, now goes 1200 between quarts.[/quote]
24000?
Did you put 24000 miles on a sled? or KM... still thats a TON!

Oil
My 04 warrior uses maybe 1/2 - 3/4 quart every 500 miles. No problem with tthe plugs.
I get maybe 2000 miles per season. Thats maybe 4 quarts a year at $2/quart (valvoline)
I'll live with it until it needs a rebuild for other reasons. 8000 miles so far. Riding buddy has 34000 on his 03 rx1. He did are rebuild at 24500 miles.

Check to see if the airbox is sealed up to the carbs real good. My 2004 Warrior well use a littlle oil when the airbox get loose. It may get loose if you do some ditch banging. Those carb clamps must be fully on the carbs befor they are tightened. Just a thought.

For anybody that burns say a 1qt in 400 miles does it smoke, smell or anything? What is considered 'normal' by yamaha?
