OK my buddy asked if i would ask,so hear it is,have any of you exhaust exsperts out there heat tape up your pipes under the tunnel for better heat build up,if so what did you use and did it last, plus what gains did you see,or any bad things happen because of it?? Hes looking for different types of in put.. Thanks

I am by no means an exhaust expert but the hotter an engine runs while working is not good for it.

why would you want heat build up?
it can have some bennifits, but it will make your exhaust pipes fatige and break from not being able to dissapate the heat

It's to build heat in the pipes, not the engine.

you could check our Fireball coatings. website...http://www.fireballcoatings.com/
We have done there chroming to a couple of 2-stroke sleds, not really sure if there was a gain from doing them but they sure came back looking allot better from being rusty and crappy looking.

I remember one thread where the guys sled burned to the ground because his pipes got to hot. I cant see the benefits outweighing the risk of fire and engine problems.

If you are talking about turbo sleds with rear mount turbo's , yes I am taking my pipe off and wrapping it . This gets rid of turbo lag by keeping heat to the turbo instead of being cooled off by snow.

If you should do anything i would get it ceramic coated inside and out... Holds in the heat and drops the temps around it dramatically..

Thanks guys, yes we have wrapped our pipes on 2-smokes and or nippled them down for quick heat, but mostly it was for building quick heat to race 500-660 ft.not for long term, and yes the coating has been around for some time,so i am looking for first hand exsperience from the guys using this set up,again keep your opinions coming in

A hot pipe helps with a 2 stroke but i don't think there is any benifit on a 4 stroke . Race cars use strait pipes for better flow . 2 stroke uses a tuned pipe and the heat helps the pulses bounce back to stop the flow out of the exaust port . This is not necesary on a 4 stroke as they use valves .

Wrapping the Exhaust
When I saw that post I had to laugh. It was 1981 (I was 21)and my friends and I went to Hayward Wisconsin to ride for a week. I was riding a 1980 SS440 and the rest of the group was a mix of Polaris, Yams and AC's. My friend, new to snowmobiling, read that wrapping the exhaust would improve preformance. Well, when he fired it up it ran really well for a mile or so then blew up; the funniest thing I ever saw since he was convinced that were wrong to say it would build up to much heat.. He sat in a bar with a bunch of locals for the balance of the week. Incidentially, my friend Marc is now an avaiation mechanic for Southwest Airlines in Arizona. I told my freinds that I don't fly Southwest..........

PS: We cannot get him up here to ride sleds, he rides ATVs in the desert!!

Keeping the pipe cool will allow exhaust to flow out the end more easily (less heat = less pressure = less volume). Probably make more sense to add cooling fins to the pipe.
