XTX wont start when cold

Just found out my exup cable snapped but really didn't affect starting unless -25F or so. Throttle bound once engine light went on pumped the throttle but stalled out going 60mphish. I was like what the heck was that??? Restarted no warning lights,no codes ran & started like a champ for another month. Always put in less gas than my bud on SE for fillups. My point is you don't know what is going on until you dig into these sleds...lots of tech. I didn't think I could have no exup & not have a code or indication that it wasn't working....no drop in mph or mpg....justt ran good....who knew???

mine was broke last year I spliced it back together but will have to address that to this summer no fault code for me either probably delete it all together

strange thing is had no issues first season I do wonder if it is a plug issue that first off season I had trouble with leaving the sled alone and started it alott and did flood it out once and i have also heard that if the airbox is not on good it can have issues so my plan is to replace the plugs check air box and go from there unless someone chimes in with anouther solution. I dont think mine is voltage as i say i had jumper cables to a running sled and still nothing but then again you cant discount anything when you are working with so much technology.

Boosting a battery still does not give as much energy as a well charged battery. Booster cables dont supply as much energy as the cables from your battery.

I agree and it is possible but it would crank full speed and after enough cranking it would fire so if it were due to low voltage/amperage would it ever start then? if anything after cranking and cranking to the point that batery is dead and have to wait for some charge to get it to crank again and cranking it to the point that i am worried about the starter over heating and dieing. so with that in mind the fact that when it actualy starts it is as weak as it can be and still turn the motor over would you theory still hold watter is my wonder. Dont get me wrong I am going to check the battery fully just dont want this to be the only sugestion you come up with because you tend to think thing thru very well.and thanks for the input.

I have seen those that ride in extreme weather have put a battery blanket on their battery. Like others have said, it did require a power source of course. That may be worth trying. That is some cold weather you guys are dealing with. We did -17f last year and I'm glad it was the first ride of the season, as I never felt the cold!!

PS: -40f and -40c are the same. BUTT COLD!!

best time to ride everyone else stays home and trails are hard and fast.

just a suggestion, start your sled every couple of weeks in the summer to keep the battery up, I run my sled until the heat exchangers start to get hot and then shut if off. I make sure to put fuel stabilizer in the fuel tank. only had to replace the battery once on a Yamaha sled after owning several with electric start. I currently own an 2012 xtx and have been doing the same procedure on this sled as well, this will be the fourth winter on the original battery, started the sled yesterday, battery is still at its peak.

Yeah I won't be riding in those temps any longer -30F was crazy enough done with -20F & below too much frostbite.

If it fires and stalls, then pops a bit out the tail pipes with a bit of raw fuel smell its flooded. Both times mine would not start last winter in -35 to -40 below I had to pull the fuel relay to stop more fuel from going in. Then crank it for 5 seconds or so till it stopped popping out the tail pipe. Reinstall fuel relay try again, repeat a few times till it started up. My sled was in my trailer and you could smell fuel strongly. It is a problem with carb and injection when temps fall that cold. With a carb sled you turn off the fuel richener on injection you pull the fuel relay.

I blame my sled not wanting to start on less viscous oil and a four year old battery. 0-40 amsoil back in and going to buy a larger RX style battery with reversed posts to replace the smaller less cranking amp Apex battery.

makes sense and plays into the possibility of partialy fouled plugs from off season starting without getting fully up to temp. fuel relay you are reffering to is in footwell the one people replace because it freezes sometimes correct.

Which relay is the fuel pump relay?

Yep that is the one. Left footwell it clicks when the pump starts. Unless you have the new red relay installed its solid state doesn't click but then you would know which one it is.

on most sleds it's the 3rd relay left to right sitting on the sled
