y pipe repair

I have a 05 rx1 with 7000mi and the y pipes have worn through the flanges I am wondering if anybody has experience with the repair flanges that can be riveted or welded on. I have access to a laser welder but have no experience with titanium and dont know if it can be successfully welded with s.s. wire.

Titanium must be welded with titanium rod. Very pricey but doable. Air craft industry welds thier titanium parts all the time. It's cheaper to convert to the stainless headers.

I bought the repair kit for my Attak. I had one flange cracked and was able to fix the problem with the y pipe still on the sled. The kit came with the flanges and exhaust donuts with new bolts as well. Not too pricey when you add everything. I would not rivet the flange on as they may become loose and then you would have a hole in the pipe. I did not weld the flange on. It is a very snug fit and you have to tap it in. The clamps hold it in place so it should not come loose. I put 300 miles on it before the end of the season. Was an easy fix.

I just bought a SS set used off a 2003 or 2004 RX. Check the guys parting out or the classifieds. The SS ones last forever!

Best way to fix an 05 RX with broken titanium y-pipes is to replace them with the stock stainless y-pipes from either an 03-04 model (preferably the 04 as they have an extra support on them). Before installing the 03-04 style remove the stock heat shields on them as they are not necessary and lead to rattles down the road as the rivets get loose over time.

Well i bought the repair flanges and will be trying to weld them on from the inside so if the titanium cracks at least it wont break free. I"ll let you know how it goes and try to post pics thanks for all the help.

update

Finally got around to laser welding the repair flanges and while the weld looked great it did not hold up and cracked easily when tested.the titanium just gets too brittle even under very low temp welding and will not fuse with the cold roll steel flanges. although i believe by welding it from the inside it has at least filled the slight gaps that were there.Welding is not needed as per instructions so I"ll see how long the repair lasts. Was going to post pics but lost all my pics when my iphone fell out of shorts pocket and went through mower deck.
