I've had several Yamahas now and they've all been bulletproof. But I'll share a different side of the coin, and actually answer one of your questions. My wife's had a gear go in the gear reduction box. Now it was a fluke thing since the box has been used on most of their 4 strokes (as I've been told by more than a few dealers). I've never seen any report of this happening so perhaps a friday afternoon, too much saki type of thing
Understandably I was mad, as anyone who has a problem is. Yamaha more than made good with me, and cut me such a sweet deal because of the time it was down that I have a hard time even complaining. My friends who own other makes have just shaken their heads and couldn't believe it. They took care of me. Now they didn't just waltz in with a silver platter, I had to use the squeeky wheel, but the point was that they didn't ignore me, and they did everything they could to make me satisfied. That is what makes a great company and even those of my friends who have other makes readily agreed that they wouldn't have gotten the same deal/treatment.
So yes, very reliable, a casual perusal of forums will tell you that, and they stand by their product. A polaris buddy of mine was checking out my new Nytro's (pics soon) and commented on the fit and finish. They really have a great package.

Other than little stuff like terrible welds on grease fittings or lack there of grease fittings and idler wheels without replaceable bearings I have had no really complaints about my 4 stroke. The engine is absolutely bulletproof on the 3 holer. Also the stock skis really need to be changed out if you ride agressivly at all but that has been an issue for quite some time.

I just picked up my FX Nytro yesterday, and it is a beautiful work of art! The fit and finish are so much better than my doo or my buddies 07 F6.

the closest you come Yamaha aint a snowmobile manufacturer.. its Honda.
Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo, Polaris, they all have issues with engines, powertrains or electrical.
Yamaha has very few.
my fathers RS Venture TF did Bearing in driveshaft/geartrain give upp at 4500km.
had to change it upp n the hills in -15celsius
the only thing people here in Sweden complains about is Hy-fax wearing(slides) burning and so on. But it aint a problem either, they wears until next into marks and than it stays there for long time.

ive had many Polaris Earlier but yamaha took over, Arctic and Ski-doo am i to afraid to own... :ORC

The thing I like about Yamaha is issues that they have are small, I won't loose out on riding time..Sure the hyfax issue, heated grips etc but at least you can still drive them. AT least I am not loosing out a week of riding because the dealer has to rebuild my motor, or clutchs etc...It's all about seat time, winters too short to be repairing my sled every night ......

After owning 13 Polarii I went to a 2005 Vector ER. My rants about the rear skid are well known to most on the Vector forum. B4 last year I put in an M10, and it's all good now! Great ride, great motor, great gas mileage = GREAT SLED!

What Blue said!
Yamaha has been know to be the very best in "Fit and Finnish" since they started building them!

Thanks for the input. I've also been looking around on different forums and was impressed by how minor and infrequent the problems with Yamaha's seem to be. Decided to go to my local Yamaha dealer and checked out some sleds they had on the floor and was completely amazed at how well everything is engineered and assembled. So far I am convinced that Yamaha is the way to go. The next step is to ride one. The dealer said he could work out some riding time on some machines when we get a good snow base.
Now I will have to figure out which model to get.

BRB said:Currently I own a 2007 Arctic Cat Crossfire and while I like the sled the build quality is absolutely terrible and I have had too many problems with it.
I ride with mostly Crossfire guys, and I too like the sled (especially the skid .....I put one in my Warrior). I know what your saying about the build quality .... the way the side panels fit (the knobs), the 'floppy hood, the styrofoam seat etc.
There is no comparison as to how Yamaha's are put together. The body parts fit, and where a screw is needed, there is a screw. It's funny how doing it right when the sled is manufactured decreases sooo many little things down the road.

It will be interesting to see how the XP's hold up, they look awful cheap to me.

First of all, no engine, even a yamaha or honda is 100% reliable. If it has moving parts it can break.
I'm looking at purchasing the FX Nytro this year coming off an F7. The F7 has been solid, great performer and a hoot to drive. Yes, I had a few updates, but the dealer always took care of me and made sure I didn't lose any saddle time. One reason I'm looking to change brands is location of dealership. The Yamaha guy is 30 miles closer, and so is his parts/acc dept and he should be able to provide great service.
Before the Fx Nytro came out with the EFI, four-stroke, 130+ hp, chassis, other things, there was nothing appealing about the ride that would get me off the F7. I did drive several of the 4 strokers, but keep in mind jumping onto one of these new ones is a big chunk of $$ for me, so there has to be some value behind it. I've never been a brand basher because I remember the early days of riding and they were all junk. Wrench during the week to ride on the weekend. Every sled right now I see coming out is pretty damn nice in comparison.
Anyway, time to try out the yamaha for the next few years. I expect it will be good.

Good comments psychosledder!! All of the TY rides I have been on there has been at least 1 person not riding a Yamaha. I always hear a little good natured ribbing going on, but it never gets out of hand. Congratulations on your new sled choice and welcome to the site. Could you please fill out your location in your profile? Helps everyone out and is 1 of our site rules.

Congrats and welcome Psychosledder,
Glad to hear you found a sled that meets your needs and also giving 4 strokes a try.
Although I agree with you in principle that no engine is 100% reliable, I hope the motor will surprise you and will be able to say after your first year riding the FX Nytro, that the engine was 100% bullet proof.
When ever I reach for the key to start my sled, I start smiling because I know I'm going to hear music.
I'm really interested to hear how the engine will perform. I hope that 130 plus FI three holer will find it's way into the next generation of Yamaha Venture touring sleds.
Good or bad, ride reports are greatly appreciated.
All the best!
