Yamaha vs Yamacat build quality

It sounds like we've all been spoiled a little bit by owing true Yamaha sleds and are used to that high standard. It's frustrating at first but for me after riding it for the first time I can live with the small imperfections because the performance far out weights the mis- fitting panels. But that's just me.

Even though there is some poor fit and finish issues. The cat agreement brought me to Yamaha and I personally wouldn't even consider buying any other Yamaha that didn't have a cat chassis up to this point.

You know I wish Yamaha would step up and make a sled too but many things I don't miss and those outweigh any so called fit and finish by far not even close. Even the heckling from 2laps and some of my buddies over it being a Cat leaves me with no regrets. I am able to ride faster, longer and with less maintainence than any Yamaha I have owned or ridden before. What more can be asked for other than Power but that will never end!

Looked at a Sidewinder on Friday at Pat's. The fit and finish looked aok to me as far as showroom presentation. Also SWs don't sell for $17K much cheaper than that by far. My problem is my knees are pressing on the side panels which I don't like. Sat on Poo AXYS and plenty of clearance for knees. No interest in Poo 2s but I would think AC/Yamaha could bend the plastic to allow more knee clearance.
Totally agree with the knee clearance. Thought about buying the pads to see if that helps.

The Sidewinder has more clearance at knees than Viper. Do wish was more knee room. Pads would give you less room since pad takes up space. Never got sore knees myself and am almost always all the way forward. The plastic is pretty flexible.

This is my first impression on quality. Two weeks out of the crate and zero miles. The upper control arm has rust and thin paint. Weld on the rear suspension has rust. Anybody have a number or other contact for Yamaha? At this rate I'll get through one season and be repainting.

Same problems on my 16. I sprayed all the seams with fluid film. Then wiped the a arms off. It didn't show anymore rust this summer.

Also am I missing a thumb screw on the cowling? There is one on one side and a hole for one on the other side. Looked at some at another dealer that had two Vipers and neither had any.

They only come on one side. I ordered one so I could have them on both sides , on my 16.

Early sixteen didn't come with thumb screws. Just torx head.

IMO this is more a reflection on your dealer not Yamaha. I may be mistaken but my guess it was stored outdoors in the crate. I bought my 2 from a dealer out of the crate but they were stored indoors. Not a spec of rust. Being stored outdoors with the constant temp change and humidity build up would rust even the best of painted weld joints. Spray them down with a good cleaner and a good rust preventative and you should be good to go. My wife's saw snow last season and a good cleaning and spray down at the joints before putting away and no rust to be found. My 2cents of course. See sleds in crates stored outdoors all the time around here. Makes my skin crawl. Big reason I chose dealer I did. Sleds never outside!

Mine had one, but not anymore, lost it and don't miss it at all, don't need them.

Picked mine up and noticed that the back bumper paint had a patch about 3" in lenght that was screwed.
Looked like they painted over corrosion or the paint ran and they just put more over it.

I had to point it out. I noticed it when I was still 20' from my new sled at dealers, it was sitting back facing me when I walk in to the yard to pick it up.

I let the sales guy show me how to take all my plastic off and how to thumb through my gauges etc, then I asked about the paint. Huh he said, again Come On Man I know you all saw that, at that point the assemblers came out and said yeah first one with paint problem we have seen, they noticed it and did not mention it!!!

Have not had a chance to look it over real good, hopefully in a month or so I can take it out of trailer and put it in garage for a real look over.
It's a cat with a Yamaha motor , clutches and color, it will out ride and out handle any of my past Yamahas on rough trails but the fit and finish is Cat. Have owned a bunch of them to!

Can't wait to try this sweet ride, that is for sure.

Oops, did not notice this was Viper section, mine is a Sidewinder LTX-LE.
