If you put a threaded zerk fitting in it will protrude through the tube and jam against the shaft inside . the bottom of the zerk fitting is cut off that is why there is no ball in them .

Have any of the Yamaha dealer employees who visit this site commented on the zerk issue yet? I'm curious if Yamaha is going to do anything about it.

On all yamaha suspensions, as long as I can remember the zerks go like this. They are set in the hole and tack welded on. Grease takes the path of least resistance. Greasing before you get it broken in a bit may cause the grease to come out around the fitting. If you can wait to grease it, you may find that you wont have any problems.

No your J B Weld is a great idea for those who go thru the trouble to do it.
Best to clean as much grease off as possible and dont put on too much so as to block complete nipple insertion. That is tough stuff.
