'16 Vector XTX idle problem

Just had the valves checked and adjusted. 7k miles. They said the exhaust had 0 clearance. They couldn't get the feeler guage in to check. Intakes were fine. I'll know next week cause it is getting down to 9 deg. f

You will definitely notice on how much better it runs when driving down the trail.

I'm curious on how 0 tolerance's made the machin have cold idle issues. It ran amazing all day after a brief forced warm up . Even after having lunch for a good hour in single digits it would start right up fine and run fine off the bat.

That's crazy that an engine with 7k would need the valves adjusted but I've read that the 3 cylinder motors do require the valve job sooner than the 4 cylinders. My 08 has close 24k and still shows no signs of needing its valves adjusted. Although I do know the time will eventually come, I'm just surprised it hasn't needed it yet based on what others have posted on here.

I was told known issues. I'll find out more tomorrow

Yamaha did a running change on the engines in 2016. The early valve adjustment is only being seen on the newer engines from 16 and up in the viper and vector...

Interesting. Did you read about the head issues with their 2016 3 cyl. Motorcycle?

Have not read anything about the motorcycles. Really dont follow the street bike stuff.

Got the 2016 Vector xtx back today from a valve lash job. $1900. Labor only. $100 to evaluate it included. Geez. Evidently he didn't use the BOP's Cam tightener. Had to lift the motor to get at the tensioner. 10.2 hours. Said this machine's head or valves is the issue. But he said he did one and it has near 20k now and I might not need it again. I'm at 6500 miles.
What I feared is true. The 2016 heads in both motorcylce 3 cly and and snowmachines had bad design. They made a change in Mid 2016 and mine was probably early 2016. What I remember in the motorcycle info on it was the valves mushroomed in the head? That would explain tight clearance. I'm going to try to find that info again. I wish I saved it.

2016 sounds like a year to stay away from in this motor. I also remember thinking of buying a Viper for my wife, and my research showed to stay away from the 2016 in that model also! Bought a 2012 Vector in almost new shape instead. With the 2016 Viper, many were putting turbos on them, and our local dealer was one of them, so there was many around back then. Yamaha changed the rods in that engine in 2016 and it couldn’t take the 180 hp, was what I read, whereas prior year Viper was OK! So does the Vector and Viper share same motor, but different exhaust?

Same motor. The rods in 16 motor will be fine without turbo.

With all the tech heads around between here and FB pages for Yamaha no one explained "exactly" what the issue is. My dealer just said not sure. Either head or valves. Kevin at port yamaha mentioned something about valves mushrooming I think. The engine is used in wave runner and side by sides if I remember what he said.
I was shocked it took 10 hours at $179 per hr to fix it. Barn of parts has a tool to reduce that but by how much I don't know. Anyway it runs fine now and if it last another 5 or 6 k miles great. I picked up a 2010 vector ltx with 300 miles on it and between the 2 I should be in good shape until I die. Being 77 yrs old you get my drift.

Most of my research for Yamaha sleds comes from this site! So many well informed sled heads who spread their knowledge for free! I ended up buying my wife a 2012 Vector with a bit over 2000 miles on it! I did take the suspension out of it so I could have all shocks rebuilt, and have done nothing else to it with exception to dual carbides and studs! Such a great running motor and it always starts so easy, always, unlike my 2017 Sidewinder. Sometimes it takes multiple tries and it’s been like that since new, other times it only cranks over 4-5 times and starts! The Vector cranks over twice and starts every time! And yes this 2012 Vector should last us for many years! We use it for riding and pulling our Ice Fishing pull behind sled. It’s strong and has lots of low end torque for that! Wow 77 and still doing it, I love hearing that at my young age of 70!

Does that affect all vectors from 2016 thur 2018

Not sure. Ask Kevin at Port Yamaha parts. I believe he said yes but the 16s were the worse. Yamaha made big changes in the 16 yr so who knows how that effected and I haven't heard any info on if it comes back in 5k miles or 15k. 5k was the begining I worried but I believed it sputtered long before that just didn't die out.
