Ride and rice. I would say that 90% of the people here agree that the 23 works great with no top end loss. If you stick to short runs you could probably go even lower. For an Apex 170 hp and below the 23/38 is a good setup.

I would go with a 4 degree Hauck key. If anything you will lose a little mid rpm power but pic up top. The Apex pulls back the timing on top end. I have mine advanced 5 degrees.

I am not sure how much splitting the gasket brings up the compresion. I am guessing 15-20 psi. It should be good for about 5 hp. It will not hurt top end. Raising compression gives you HP everywhere. I would bet that splitting the gasket, advancing the timing and just cleaning up the head a...

I pulled my head off this past weekend and ported the head,throttle body, header pipes and the boots between the head and throttle body. Everything went well. I have heard it both ways losing power and gaining power. I will be gutting mine this weekend. I plan to leave the large pipes that everyone is cutting out and cutting out the small crossover pipes that lead to the outside chambers. This way it is still taking the same path as the factory set up...

170-180 HP will require more than intake and a PC. His cams and some porting will put you over 180.

The key is just there to make sure you are in the correct position. It is a tapered shaft that locks as soon as you tighten it. Your clutch does not have a key does it?

My brother in-law just put one on his RX. It is a nice guage which you can change the backlight to 4-5 different colors. He only paid about $35 bucks for it. I will post again with more info on it. I think that I will be putting one on my sled for that kind of money.

Make sure that you run long studs to make up for the little you sacrafice in hole shot over the 1.25 and you will be set.
