03 Coils

I just bought a 03 rx1, i was reading a topic that said something was wrong with the coils and that a service bulletin was put out on them. Can someone tell me what i need to look for to tell whether this update has been done on my sled and will yamaha cover it?

I am unaware of any problems, other than using dielectric grease on the coil sticks for lubrication and waterproofing so they slide all the way into the valve cover. If the sticks are not fully engaged with the spark plug there will be some arching and black residue on the plug tops.

I ve got the coil problem problem 3 out of 4 coils are bad. take off the cap on the coil so you can see inside the spark plug hole when the motor is running. shut off the lights and look in the plug holes if it looks like a lite show. talk to the yamaha dealer close to you and tell them that your coils are the old ones and see what they will do for you .Ive heard some wont you and some do. some people are saying to use elec. grease to help seal so the spark is cocealed on the plug. I tryed that and it did'nt help. I called my dealer and they were awere of the problem and said to bring it in and they would take care of it. Iv had the sled since oct of last year and I havent had it running right since. so Im hoping that this does the trick

The TSB is for 03, the clip inside the coil/cap cause it wear the top the plug, then it does not make contract. It is not warranty, I have seen a 04 sled have arcing coil/caps. I guess it just one thing we have to live with. Don't know if the 05 caps are any better, or will time tell on them too, as we start to see some miles/failures on 05 too.

my sled has 1500 miles and have changed plugs 5 times with same problems.

lippy, what was the symptoms on your sled ?

running very rich. exhaust tips are black from soot. or unburnd gas. 10 miles per gallon average. 12 is best. never runs the same. sometimes I can out run everyone most times cant get out of own way. 96 mph max. 9400 rpm max I see. and on last trip left side exhaust was really hot to touch. right side was cool. (unburned gas building in left side burning in muffler. 3 out of 4 coils were bad. two on left werearcing most and right side only one was misfiring. at slow speeds could here a miss
